If a thread is unanswered or someone has questions about it, what is wrong with posting on a year old thread? A thread is a thread.

If a thread is unanswered or someone has questions about it, what is wrong with posting on a year old thread? A thread is a thread.

Because information has likely changed since the post was originally made. It can result in conflicting or downright incorrect comments/information being spread. Plus it's safe to assume that if the OP cared about the thread anymore then there would be a new thread somewhere else.

OK, maybe only some threads are annoying when necroed like those asking for gpu advice but for threads like what is the worst..... and show off your.... i don't mind. in fact, i encourage it.

When the information is still modern and relevant, if it is unanswered, people still have questions about it. Just because it's old doesn't mean it should be locked away...

most of the time the question will be irrelevant after +/-3 months or the info/best answer has changed, this basically means if you make a thread asking for what GPU to use someone after 1y can come up with

"yeah, why not get GPU XYZ from brandY which is cheaper but works better?"

altough like terrytek says, there are exceptions.

but i also like it, gives me a reason to use this:

example thread:(please don't necro it again! since mods didnt lock it yet)

Perfect example!

Whats wrong with posting that thread? Noctuas fans are... still brown, making the information still relevant. If people still have things to discuss about Noctuas fans, then whats the difference between posting on an old thread rather than a new one...

it's wrong because.

1) the question had already been answerd

2) the post that necrod(about making a noctua LED fan) has NOTHING to do with notcua's choice of colour

3) the thread if from 2013! FUCKING 2013!

4)(might be personal opinion) the poster of it is a 1st time poster, that somehow dug to 2013 and necroed the post with something not completely related to the discussion OP wanted to have.

5) of the new posts after my necro sign only 1 is related to OP, giving an idea of the speed of decay of the ressurected thread.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

If a thread is unanswered or someone has questions about it, what is wrong with posting on a year old thread? A thread is a thread.

because our rules say so:

4.3 Thread Necroing

Thread necroing consists of reviving a previously resolved, settled, or "dead" thread after a prolonged period of time by the OP with the intention of bumping the thread to the top of the board. Threads with an activity gap of 1 month or greater that are brought back to the front page is considered "thread necroing". A shorter duration may be considered when dealing with situations like previously resolved threads being reposted or simply for the purpose of bumping it to the front page. Build logs are exempt from this rule.

and like djdwosk97 replied earlier if it was still relevant, then it'd still be a live

thread. otherwise, the data/information has certainly changed (in a years-time),

OP no longer is interested in the topic, or need for dated material is minimal.

if new information is present, then create a new topic to bring the new

information to light for others to review/share.

Normally when I see threads necroed by someone asking something relevant to that thread the result is normally people replying to the first post not the new question. People that see the thread and don't realize that that only the newer posts matter tend to ignore them and try to respond to the first post of the thread which is not needed since it can be a year old and end up just being annoying to everyone that reads it.
