Well the story goes like this, over the past month my siblings PC has gradually been getting louder and louder, I finally decided to do something yesterday, I was done with being able to hear it from the next room while it was running simple tasks like netflix. For fun before I took on this project I ran Prime95, the cpu cooler got so loud it could be heard 30 feet away and around a corner without having to try to listen to it.

So I took off the side panel and yea dust, lots of dust, so I said "screw it I have a whole evening with nothing to do, let's rebuild this PC and clean every nook and crany"

Dust

Oh dear lord

Also noticed that whoever put on thermal paste previously used to much.

All the parts nice and clean with the Spec's

PATA Floppy drive

PATA Optical drive

Ran it before I put it all back in the case.

Finishing up and Cable Management

I swapped the PATA optical drive for a old SATA one I had in my basement, and replaced the 3GB of 533mhz with 4GB of 667mhz ram that was also in my basement.

I put the optical drive in the lower bay so I could have the upper bay to store all the unused cables and clean everything up.

I took the but ugly PATA ribon cable and sliced the ribbon so it was split into pairs, then used cable ties to scrunch it all up nicely to connect the floppy drive (decided to keep it because the front panel is molded to have it, and you never know when you will find a old floppy disk and want to discover what's on it."

I also ran the 2 sata cables behind the motherboard tray, there was only about 4-6mm of space so any other cables would not be an option.

Before and After

After

Sadly the PC is too old to have a temperature sensor on the cpu, so I can only judge temps by soud.

The big surprise was when I powered it up on the test bench, when the cpu was idling with no case to block the noise, the power supplies tiny amount of coil whine was louder then the CPU cooler, and the thing is a 130 Watt cpu with a stock cooler, it just blew me away.

Hopefully after this much needed rebuild, this old Pentium D will last much longer for my 5 younger siblings, who use it daily for playing games, doing homework and watching Netflix.

Nice job, a good cleanout helps any pc perform so much better :3 I've only ever done this with laptops and the difference in performance, noise and temps is insane

There is nothing like cramming a big, thick, IDE cable behind stuff.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

Jesus that dust in the PSU

You should see my Dad's server fans...  I think one of those 80mm has more dust than that front panel.

Or my Sister's PC that I cleaned out myself similarly.

proper thermal paste application

There is no such thing as the proper way, with the whole debate on whether to spread it or not to spread it before applying the cooler.

actually the thermal paste amount was almost correct

could be a little bit less

but it should cover the entire surface

The cpu had a full 2x2mm ridge of thermal paste around the hole cooler which is wasteful and it was quite thick where the cooler was, both of which the image failed to capture well.

kill me now

It's cool seeing a old Beige Lian-Li Full tower with 4 PURPLE LED 80mm fans (and holes cut into the front) Unfortunately, there are no filters and the machines are still using stock coolers.  At least we got rid of that old Dual Pentium 3 900 Mhz motherboard&CPU combo...  RIP.
