980 Ti or 970 SLI in future?

Tim Drake

This isn't your usual 980 Ti vs 970 SLI thread.

I currently have a 970 but I was wondering if in like 6 months should I save some money for a 980 Ti and sell my 970 or just add another 970 later?

I mean rarely have a I seen a game use more than 3.5GB of vram and of it does it is only like 3.7GB or 3.8GB which can be almost solved by memory overclocks so vram doesn't seem like a huge problem here.

P.s idc about SLI problems as I rarely hear anyone complain about SLI problems unless the games optimization is terrible so it doesn't matter what card you have.

TL;DR In 6 months should I sell my 970 and get a 980 Ti or just add like a used 970 or cheap 970?

980 Ti - it's generally more future proof, and it has more VRAM.

Also, you may even be able to throw in another 980 Ti in the future if you decide to upgrade.

Vram really isn't a problem tbh, I have no need for the extra vram.

Not caring about SLI problems is like saying you don't care about the performance.

If your looking to play at 4k I'd go Ti If 1440p or lower 970's IMO.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

You basically answered your own question, as vram is one of the big reasons to get the 980 ti.

In raw performance both options are very close to each other...

Personally I'm leaning towards another 970 myself. I was thinking about maybe trading up to a Fury or 980 Ti but I can't justify spending that much money these days.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

If you read on I was saying there is rarely any problems.

I did read on, I disagreed with that assessment but I gave you my opinion with the parameters you asked for. Otherwise I would have gone 980TI all the way. (those textures are only going to get bigger)

Also sorry if my initial response seemed rude.

It's fine I didn't notice if it was.

I'm thinking that when I want the extra performance, I will see which option is cheaper and go for it.

Also is 1440p dsr vs native a big enough difference? Same with 4k.

Yeah, sorry. I meant DX-12.1

SLI GTX 960s are halfway in performance between the GTX 980 and 980 Ti and trades blows with the GTX 980 Ti in some games, I reckon SLI GTX 970s will beat the 980 Ti by a respectable margin and even match the R9 295X2 in games that use less than 3.5GB of VRAM.

Thinking about it some more If Vram stacking works as advertised in DX12 I think the 970 SLI system will just be flat out better better even at 4k. So if your keeping the cards for a year or two after the upgrade it is something to think about.

In my opinion, I prefer single GTX 980Ti because some games have some issues with SLI.

Thus the extra VRAM helps, maybe you want to run in multiple monitor or something.

I rarely hear of SLI problems from new releases (which are fixed if there is) and vram really isn't a problem.

Well it's up to you actually, besides SLI 970s are fast as well.

Vram wasn't an issue for people that bought 7850 1GB cards when they where new either. It all depends on how long you plan on keeping them.

Valid point.

I would prefer a long time but IMO I see two 970s reselling for more in the future if I want to upgrade.

i was in a same situation in August of 2012. i had to choose between either going for Sli setup or Single card in future.

i got my Gtx 670 and went for another one of it after a year in 2013. its been over 2 years for Sli. i have had literally no issues when i had a single 670 in my rig. when ever i needed to game i game without any issues and simple downloaded and installed every update i got from Geforce website. not until i got 2 of these. i got huge, like huge fps drops "OUTTA NO WHERE"  ;)  and over heating issues as well cause of broken drivers from Nvidia.

currently im using December 2014 drivers for my SLi cause these are the best i can get for my setup. all the recent updates either give my fps drops or, some games would not even run giving me certain errors.

so moral of the story, ALWAYS avoid SLi setups the best u can. i went for SLi cause i was a student and didn't have money for 690.

if you have money or u might have a chance in having in near future as u stated, i would advise you to go for 980 ti. personally i have had all my savings for 980 ti and im getting it before this EID, INSHALLAH.

My point is with newer cards and newer games there is barely any SLI problems and of there is, they're fixed.

yes there might be fewer issues than Kepler gpus SLi but that does not mean there are legit, 'No' issues at all. SLi is something not everyone can take care of. im NOT saying you cant do it.

dont know about others but i keep my hardware neat and clean and for that i have to take care of my cards. i usually clean my cards every 3 months. and everytime i see double dust in the upper card. it runs louder, it gets all the dust, and it gets very hot. although, after Kepler heating is not a big deal but still, i care.

you can ask anyone out there, and if, provided, money is not an issue, most of the people will recommend u to go for a better high end card, than SLi. personally i would still advise you to get 980 ti if u have money right now, sell your current 970, u might get better money today than, say after 6 months.

yea i know it looks cool to have 2 cards running and showing them off, but 980 ti is a beast and you know it. 2 970s would perform "ABOUT" equal to a single 980 ti and some times even less! and also u get less VRAM. after the memory fiasco of 970, i really dont recommend it. yes i know it still is a great card, but why did they hide the facts? Not good!

and one more thing, u can expect 980 ti to be The Best Maxwell cause these are some of the best chips that are used in "ti" versions.

if you weigh in all of these facts, u can see 980 ti wins in every aspect.

here is just one proof of it, aHqdB7p9Ciw8.878x0.Z-Z96KYq.jpg

check the rest of it HERE and do check the multiple GPU part :)

at the end its all your choice though  :)

best of luck ;)

Lol at this kind of thinking, and not quite some time ago you guys told the same thing about the 970, get one now and get another later. And when that later comes here we go again, get a 980 ti and another one later. I would imagine when that "later" comes, you guys would be saying get <insert new gen gpu here> and get another one later. Smh.

My advice, get the fastest single card GPU that you can afford OR if you like multi-GPU solutions, get it the same time or not more than 6 months apart to maximize the money that you had spent before the latest and greatest generations of GPUs gets released.

I love free stuff.

GTX 970 with pseudo 4gb vram at pseudo 224gb/s at pseudo  256-bit with 56 ROPs (corrected from 64) and 1.75mb L2 cache (corrected from 2mb).
