Okay, so i have $800-$850 (Canadian) to spend on my video card and i was as best possible performance i can get considering i wont be upgrading this PC for a fairly long time (6months-1year minimum).  Now, my question is, should i get SLI 970's or get a single 980TI?  Now, what im looking for is a video card i wont need to overclock and will handle at least 1440p on a 144hz monitor.  I know i said i dont plan on upgrading for a long time, but another option would be to get a regular 980 for now and go for another 980 later for sli.  Out of all these options, what is the best to choose? (my buddy owns a 970 as well and he is offering it for free so count that as what i have now).  If you have any questions or need me to clear it up, please ask.

So in case i made it confusing, which is better.  2 SLI 970's, 980TI, or a 980 now and another 980 in about 6 months.

The Sli 970's are 650$,  The 980TI is 850$,  And the 980 would be 500$ now and 500$ in 6 months for sli

its a maybe on the free 970, so for now, it would just be 2 sli 970's... however, if i got the third 970 from my buddy, would it be worth it?

If you are getting a 970 for free then you can match the performance of a 980 Ti by spending just ~$300. Do that.

For future gaming id recommend the 980ti, That way you wont have to deal with SLI scaling and usch.

its only because he got a 980ti from his parents and he is buying another for himself, the gpu he would rather see go to someone he knows than to a random person.  It might just be a canadian thing.

The third 970 will do sod all, apart from in the odd gem like Crysis 3 and Tomb Raider that is optimised for multiple SLI.

980TI because not all games scale well with SLI

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

The value in a 980 Ti lies in its upgradeability. If you find yourself with a spare $850 in a couple of months and you want another one you can throw another one in and get 80% more performance. Two 970s perform about the same and throwing in another two will not yield much benefit.

So if you can get two 970s for very little then right now that's good value. If you think you are going to want to upgrade again within the year, go for the 980 Ti.

I can only name two that don't and they are Assassin's Creed Unity and GTA IV. Both are renowned for how terribly written they are.

A single good card is always the better option if you have the budget.

And if you have a free 970 I would sell it and use the money.

alright.  So say i dont get the free card (he is thinking about it) even if the sli 970's are 650$ and the 980ti is 850$ would you still recommend the 980ti? (those are the prices i forgot to add)

okay, so say with the 850$ i have to spend, i use it on a better cpu and i have 650$ left over (this would help a lot for the workstation i plan using it for) say i get just one 970 now and wait till around the holidays (around december-january) at that time say i have 850$ again, would you advise adding onto the 1 970 and make it sli, or would you say get the 980ti?  (also, say the next time i upgrade would be next december-january)

overall if i did it this way, it would most likely benefit me more in the long run and make working a good amount easier and sooner.

A 970 is fine for most things at 1440p, but obviously you're talking about an altogether lower echelon of performance to the 980 Ti or 970 SLI.

yes.  basically i should have worded it like i just did in the last post i said about december and january.  This way, i will get the i7 i need and still have room for a 970 for now...  overall, considering what the last post i made, said.  What would you advise then?

to sum it all up.  Get an 970 now, wait till december and january, get either a 980ti or another 970 for sli, and every december and january i get a single upgrade.  What would you advise?  that is my question.

I wouldn't upgrade to a 980 Ti from a 970, I would add another 970. You're talking about spending $800 vs $300 for the same effect. You aren't going to get a good enough price from the 970 to make it make sense if you sell it either.
