Maybe. I use Photoshop quite regularly and it never pushes system memory use above 3GB, nor do most games I play, but I'd just play it safe and go for 8GB. It's not as though memory is excessively expensive anyway... If you want to save money, you could always go for 8GB of 1333MHz, because memory speed doesn't matter that much.

Well it's because you have less RAM, more things get stored in pagefile, which slows down the system. I am at 3GB on desktop with 8gb of ram.

not a good idea to get only 4gb if you do video editing or photoshopping. Depends on which resolution your material has, you should take 8gb or even 16gb (ok it's a bit overkill for an i3) ram

I have 8GB, thank you very much. There's a solid 5GB left before it would need to address the pagefile.

4 is enough for your system to run but you really want 8 or more for anything but that, even just surfing the web.. chrome is one hungry bastard...

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

This ^. Photoshop by itself may not neet much more memory, but if you have a browser open with half a dozen tabs plus a couple of other programs you'll easily bennefit from the extra RAM

Absolutely, that's why I suggested he get 8GB, even if 4GB might possibly just about be enough for him.

4gb is really only adequate for web browsing, movie watching and Word processing. My ultra book has 4gb and I sit at 75% when in chrome with multiple tabs, youtube, Excel  and Photoshop up. Playing an OLD MMO I use about 6-8gb on my desktop.

I have tried to overload my system, having a i7 16gb ram and a Titan X and I cant i just cant use all the ram unless using ram preview in after effects while playing witcher  3. NOW THAT WAS A FUN BSOD!

Here is where I would keep my frolics if I had any.

RAM is so cheap right now it's crazy not to have at least 8GB. You should really consider doing 8GB now because you're going to need it eventually (good luck playing GTA V on 4GB) and because DDR3 prices will probably eventually shoot up like hell with people moving to DDR4 with Skylake.

This is a good point. With Skylake only supporting DDR4 and Zen likely to support DDR3 only as something of an afterthought and mainly focusing on DDR4 as well, prices of DDR3 will probably be very different next year.
