Is Sapphire R9 390 Nitro a good GPU? Compared to a 970 g1?

lol1290

I mostly asking compared to a gtx 970 g1 gaming. Here's the thing:

Seeing all the benchmarks, the 970 and 390 are pretty much neck to neck in 1080p (btw I have 1080p monitor).

But in 1440p the 390 wins by quite some fps (10-20 fps more), so would it be a better choice to go with a 390, because its more ''future-proof''?

I know that g1 OC better, but I won't be doing big overclocks anyway...

How much more money? 1$ more

I would get it for the extra vram as that is the only difference.

But you might be able to get some good prices for a 290x, and it's about equivalent to a 390

same fps half the vram so less "future proof"

The 290x will likely be much cheaper than the 390x, but has similar performance. TBH the 8gb of vram it has seems like a waste on the 390x, and it makes even less sense as you will be using the card at 1080p

I can almost guarantee that the OP will not need more than 4gb of vram, and that 390x will be getting like 20 fps in situations where that much vram is needed anyways.

Even if you want 8gb, then get a 290x 8gb version, as that is likely cheaper than the 390x as well...

Well if it's cheaper by a lot then it's worth it.

Otherwise get the 390, the extra mem bandwidth makes it better than a 290x 4gb

I use a 1440p monitor, and I can assure you that 4gb is enough... my card only has 3gb, and unless i crank up the aa (which very few people do because of the performance hit), it is usually fine...

Sure 4 years down the road games might need more vram, but that 390x will likely be obsolete by then

The 290x 8gb model is like 50$ more than 390...

While amd has very good price to performance, there are also a few drawbacks to its design, like its much higher TDP than the maxwell series. due to this the 290/ 290x generally get quite warm and loud... Maxwell is also a very good overclocker, and in some cases, will be competing against my 780 ti let alone a 290x...

It is also regional, as here in Norway there is a negligable price difference between the 970 and the 290x

Even if you don't have the money for a 1440p monitor. You can always run the GTX970 and R9 390 in DSR and VSR, respectively. I bet the games would look better running 1440p or 4k res on your 1080p monitor.

DSR= Dynamic super resolution, right?

And how do you enable it?
