Thinkpad Appreciation Thread

I hope your right.  I think if they loose the physical buttons, like the volume and trackpad/trackpoint clicks, home/pageup/down... then the sleek black chassis and the red dot on the keyboard...  is just a facade.

I'm sad that they are loosing the ultrabay, especially for the x series since they are not much thinner (except the carbon) and weigh pretty much the same?  They could have just kept the x300/x301 chassis concept and use the extra space for anything from a graphics card, hard drives , battery.. red pills... etc.

500GB SSD too small.. upgrade to the 1TB Evo!    Your caddy belongs in the ghetto riggins section (do we have on here?)

They lost the ultrabay on most of the ultra book models :( I revently vowed that I wouldnt buy a laptop that couldnt be docked and couldnt have 2 drives. I do wish they made a 14in workstation as I wont touch a 15in laptop. I also hope that their going to get the high res IPS displays the new dells are getting in their mobile workstations.

I would but its crazy expensive and my 500gb is big enough most of the time and has plenty of life left in it. You dont even notice its not supposed to be like that except for the white strip on the side. I did redo it when I went from a 750gb Scorpio black to the ssd because of the differing thickness but besides that I holds up really well because of what it was originally made for is my guess. I copied some stuff off the optical drive I pulled out like how they used some clear tape of some kind on the edges and areas that touch the case so that it slides better, thats where I put packing tape. Now it slides in and out like it was made for it.

i guess I could take some pics of what i did and used if you want it wouldnt be all that hard to do.

How much did it cost for an official one? I'm keen to trade out my DVD drive in my T410 for one. Replacing the standard HDD in the thinkpad is easy as just swapping it out for a SSD right?

Idk just look it up on lenovo's site. This is the support page for it http://goo.gl/QYmVAr . I cant seem to find any of those adapter on their site but heres that one on amazon http://amzn.to/16UIgYp .

I also did fine the correct one for mine http://goo.gl/ZlJofk and http://amzn.to/16UIGhv thing is that I bought mine direct from lenovo with my laptop so I would have thought that they would have the exact one but aparently not and abunch of people sis the same as I did and has the same problem in the past. Maybe when I give the thing an overhaul I might get that one but my current one is working great after my modifications. You may also want to check your as well basically the difference is the thickness of the optical drive your replacing.

you guys are in luck if have native SATA ultrabay connections.

As Opposed to this

Your machine uses the newer SATA ports in the tray, so there's no conversion like what I have, which is the PATA so it required a conversion circuitry.  Yeah, I'm suspecting the tray, but also the thinkpad bios as they have whitelist issues (meaning I can't even install a better wireless card, even though it's packed with extra antennas).

@dylandylandylan

Looks like yours is also using the SATA connector so any tray would do.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultrabay-Slim-SATA-2nd-Hdd-Lenovo-ThinkPad-T410-DV13-/290575508995

What laptop do you have it has to be older to have IDE like C2D era? maybe 1st gen i series at the newest but that fairly unlikely. You can get a better wireless card but you have to get it as a lenovo part all business laptop companies have to do this its something with FCC regulations and I think that has to deal with larger companies operation so many at once.

Is this what it's going to be in the future of thinkpads...  (source) ... no more trackpoint triple buttons!?!

awgwwee-580x389.png

no thanks.

Wait. Did they just take everything that is good about thinkpads and throw it out? Also it looks like one of those fake thinkpads ("Edge").

*Edit. Does it not have the lights for the Wifi, caps, etc? Those were actually kind of useful...

Also, why are they trying to make it "stylish"? If anybody wants a good looking laptop they would get a VAIO or a macbook, not a thinkpad.

Not on the T440, but this appears to have pictures of the X240/X240t:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/727701-thinkpad-x240.html

The links on that thread are down, but both the X240 and X240t looked identical to the X240s. Which is surprising considering the X230t is a convertible with a screen that flips around (Thinkpad Twist probably replaces that, eh). Based on that, X240t appears to be a refreshed X1 Carbon Touch.

Still hoping for official Lenovo announcements.

I'm very seriously thinking about getting a thinkpad for my permanent pentesting device.

I've actually never had one of these, but I've heard rave reviews about them.  I'm just not sure how thinkpad will handle Kali (Currently using BT4) specifically in wifi pentesting.

I've got BT4 and 5 working 100% on my T410, the wireless drivers also work natively. The T410 has more than enough grunt to power through commands too, battery life is mine is poor though, but refurbished batteries are pretty cheap.

what gpu is on those things?  the big thing is that for brute force attacks you need a solid gpu to leverage those higher rate calculations otherwise it'll be too slow to be worth it.

Nvidia NVS 256MB lol, I don't use the laptop for cracking passwords, it takes too long and has too high a failure rate for my liking.

Yeah, I gotta figure something out though, if I get into what I want to get into I'll have to do a lot of testing overseas, so toting a desktop isn't feasible.

It's a second hand thinkpad, they must have used the trackpad more than the trackpoint I guess!

its just weird because youd use a bunch more of the trackpad unless the sensitivity was super high

Maybe they were the type that doesn't move their finger much, and reset their finger position a lot... so they navigate the mouse in a bunch of smaller swipes and their finger mostly swipes across the same area.  I know a person that does that...

My school uses thinkpads, and I think the fact they probably got the worst and cheapest they can find has completely turned me away from all lenovo products. Even though I have an ideapad 2or whatever the 3g Windows 8 one is called

I am good at computer

What should be my first ThinkPad?
ALL I'm going to do is browse the internet.

I would get a chromebook but it's useless if I'm not connected to the internet.

t410 or t420, they keep up with every day to day task and they're relatively cheap :)
