With new graphics cards being released all the I'm wondering, Is the 980 still a worthwhile purchase for my new build? I'm well aware of it's power, but don't intend to spend £3-400 again in another year.

It isn't quite as good of a value as the 970 and 980ti, but its still a great card. The 980ti is better if you can afford it, but thee 980 isn't bad. There isn't and real reason to not get it if you can afford it.

So what's your budget ?

In ~9 days the fury will be here, then you can either get a cheaper 980 or a fury

Or invest a bit more and get a 980ti

Recommend what is best, not what you preffer.

I've looked at listings for the 980Ti, Now I thought it would be way out of my budget, but, it seems I could get one for around £550. I might aswell wait a bit longer and get one of those.

Thanks guys :)

You won't even have to wait that long. If AMD's Fury really offers Titan X performance, much like the 980 Ti, prices may come down some.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

You're not going to be running SLI, but yes, that would be able to support a 980 Ti with plenty of headroom for overclocks.

So, have been talking on Twitter about this and someone has said I shouldn't get a 980Ti unless I intend on a getting a 1440p monitor also. Can you guys clarify if this is correct?

I don't want to waste money.

Depends on what you're trying to do. Can you tell us more about the monitor you do have? 1080p, I assume, but what's it's refresh rate?

A single 980 Ti even does alright at 4K, so it could probably deliver 100+ FPS in many games at 1080p. It's pretty overpowered if you're just going to cut off your framerate at 60. If you're aiming to get the most out of a 120 or 144 Hz monitor with or without Gsync, then it's a lot more justified.

I have 3 of these Asus monitors http://www.ebuyer.com/393202-asus-ve228hr-21-5-led-lcd-hdmi-monitor-ve228hr

All 1080p

Are you planning to game on a single display (1920x1080) and use the others for desktop work only, or are you going to play in surround (5760x1080)?

Triple-1080p gaming approaches the GPU demands of 4K, whereas using extra monitors for desktop stuff takes no significant GPU work. A 980 Ti seems like it would be very well-suited to the former, actually.

I guess I'd like the option to be able to use all 3 to play a game on, for the most part it will be single display though.

Well, then it comes down to your preferences and whether you're willing to pay the extra for that. The 980 Ti should get you to 60 FPS in most games at 5760x1080 (I'm estimating based on how it does at 4K, hopefully someone else will confirm). I'd probably recommend a 970 or vanilla 980 at most for 1080p only, but they would probably struggle a bit to game on three 1080p monitors. Tripling the GPU demands is huge, so it's hard to find a "middle ground" here.

The "middle ground" you're having trouble finding is the 980.

The 980 seems primed for a price cut when the Radeon Fury releases in July at $550 (not talking about the Radeon Fury X that releases June 24th at $649). Anything above 980 is real overkill for 1080p if you're playing on a single monitor. The 980 is kind of too, as the 970 does really well at 1080p. However, the 980 would allow you to play GTA V with most settings maxed out (just grass on very high, advanced settings off) and probably be able to maintain a locked 60 fps with 2xMSAA, while the 15% weaker GTX 970 can do all that but only with FXAA if you want a locked 60 fps, at least on my 970 at 1417 MHz boost clock (driving through the forest near Mt Chiliad is where I can drop into the low 50s fps when using 2xMSAA). But 2xMSAA actually is pretty nice to use in GTA V, since you can see obvious jaggies on the heads of NPCs when using FXAA that are wiped out by 2xMSAA.

You might also consider waiting for the R9 Nano, which sounds like it'll be AMD's answer to the 980. But they could only say it's set for a summer 2015 release, so maybe you'd be waiting until August there.

Thanks for reminding me about a card I mentioned right in that post. Apparently I need to clarify… What I meant was, there isn't a single card that is a perfect fit for 1080p60 that's also going to enable good performance at 5760x1080. A 980 is arguably overpriced/overpowered for mainstream 1080p, while probably not delivering 60 FPS consistently in new games at 5760x1080.
