960 vs r9 270x

Ok guys, I'm sure there's been a lot of this exact post, but I need your help anyway !

I'm building a Pc for my younger brother and he wants about the same performance as my rig but his budget is a bit limited.

 

On my side I have a Core i3 4150 with a 960, and I was going to build him a pc with a g3258 and a 960, but the Gpu might be too pricy. So I'm thinking about going team Red for his build.

 

so Here are the choices:

 

any 960 (asus EVGA etc..) for around 260$ + tax

USED gigabyte 270x with 4gb for 180$

USED sapphire 270x for 130$.

 

watched this comparison video, but still want your opinion now that both cards are well documented !

960, or even a R9 280X if you spend a little more

Well, the 270x is a weaker card, hence the lower price. The AMD equivalent of the 960 is 280/285.

If you can find those cheaper -> go for it.

You can get a new 280 on Amazon for $160, don't go used if you don't  have to. I'm pretty sure the sale for the Sapphire card is "universal" as well. Lemme check...

Dont get he 270x, It is just a 270 but overclocked from factory, You either step up to the R9 280 or down to the 270.

If you can adjust the budget to get an i3+270 that'll be the better option i think.

You can't do that btw, 270x don't support Dual Graphics.

That's not possible. The highest card that can be Xfired with an APU is the 250.

First of all, it isn't logical to compare prices of new vs. used for the obvious reason.

Second, a GTX 960 can sell for as low as $180 at Amazon for a 2gb reference from PNY.  EVGA 2gb go for about $200 and $4gb models go for about $240.

Third, if you're going to go the Radeon R9 route, power supply IS an issue.  If you don't have a minimum of 500 watts, either forget it or you have to buy one which is extra $$$.  Most Nvidia cards do fine with a 300-400watt.  Heck a 750ti will even run on a 200 watt PSU from store bought HP and Dells.

Sigh... I'm a nvidia fanboy but that is just wrong. 970 doesn't kick the shit out of the 290 and quite likely the psu he has will work and even if it doesn't a 650w psu can be had for 50 usd. Seriously. The 290 for the same price of a 960 is an incredible bargin.

New 290 from sapphire is 242 from newegg. I'm not cherry picking.

I was in that predicament.  My PSU couldn't handle anything higher than an R9 270 but I wanted an upgrade from my 650ti.  I only had a 400 watt PSU and I'd have to spend extra money just to buy AMD.  I did my research and my people with problems with R9 are usually from PSUs that are under rated.  A guy with a 290 kept getting artifacts, bsods and random reboots.  He had a 500 watt PSU.  He upgraded to a 800 watt unit and the card ran fine.  However, I'm not looking forward to spend the extra $100 on a PSU.

 

Are there $50 PSU?  Sure, but they're probably pieces of shit that would burn out your hardware.  Don't even bring up rebates because I avoid those.  1/2 of the time they never come and I'm not going to sue a company over $10.
