So I decided to start watching the archive if The Tek in pod cast form on my commute and listened to the lads talking about something I had not heard about before, evercookies. I am surprised that there is not more information out there about these.

I eventually got onto a few articles like this one from Ars Technica

http://arstechnica.com/security/2010/10/it-is-possible-to-kill-the-evercookie/

but while they explain the basics when it came to finding software to prevent/remove these I fell flat

Any one know of software to keep these bloody things off my PC? Anyone know anything more about them than the basics?

Why do you even care?

Some people just don't like being tracked.

@Ethnod : Mil Shield supposedly does the job, but I do have a workaround of my own.

You can use a virtual machine for most web browsing, with a copy of the fresh virtual disk so you can just "reset" the whole thing completely. Delete the virtual disk you use, replace it with the copy and you're good to go again. Ghostery, A VPN and MAC spoofing do the rest of the work. If you're running from an SSD, it doesn't take too long to do a reset.

As for keeping your bookmarks, exporting them to a stick, NAS or your own domain before you "reset" the VM will do the trick. NAS or domain are the easiest because you can store a link to the file on your desktop for easy importing.

if they dont like being tracked they should get off the internet because as long as you are on the internet you are always being tracked

deleting cookies will do nothing for you

Captain Chaos, I commend your commitment but I think that is just a little over my can be arsed threshold (the Ghostery that is), although I have not does anything like that in years so maybe its less convoluted than I am imagining. I'll have to look into it at some stage

However, I will for sure check out Mil Shield. Thanks

Anyone else have any other suggestions or knowledge about EverCookies?

Seriously?

Do you really think that deleting cookies keeps you from getting tracked?

your ISP can see everything in your connection, websites you visit record your location, IP, and all the data you send to them

search engines save anything you type into them

all cookies do is keep extra information on your PC so that when you access the site again it knows you were there before and what you did

People are paranoid about privacy on the internet when there actually is none. When you go out in public you can't just tell people to look away from you for privacy. Use some common sense.

Actually not so much here. In ireland we have the Data protection act which prevents a lot of the BS that happens on your side of the pond, it's not perfect but it's better. And no, I'm not naive enough to believe that I can be totally anonymous on the internet but at home I use some programs and addons that help reduce the amount of it which makes me feel better. I'm not doing anything illegal but I also don't agree that companies who sell ads on websites for other companies can then use that advert as a way of tracking you, or that they can buy up popular websites just for the traffic so they can track more and more people to then sell that data off. I'm sure the world of Advertising in Minority Report is coming but I'd rather not help it along.

You may think that any kind of resistance to this "norm" that is total and complete intrusive tracking of everyone and everything at all times is silly but I think the opposite. I feel that not fighting it in some way is naive and silly tbh. I believe in advertising, I don't like it but online its a necessary evil (that is why I whitelist Youtube, LinusTechTips, The Tek and many more) but there is a medium to be found which does not involve a private company knowing if your daughter is pregnant before you do simply from looking at your cookie information, its not even something that should be a thing at all, its a complete invasion of privacy.

We should be able to opt out of tracking, maybe have different levels of tracking. As a society/community (or what ever) we should learn to support the websites and services we like and enjoy rather than just expecting everything for free. However, the alternative should not be total and complete abuse of my personal information.

Regardless for my reasons I did not put those reasons up for debate on this thread dude, I mean I have no issue debating this with anyone but the purpose of the thread had nothing to do with that

people think that they are safe from tracking because their country has laws prohibiting them from spying on their citizens

but theyre wrong

a country is in alliance with other countries and the countries spy on eachother, then give the data to the government of the country they are spying on.

a good example is the US and canada

if canada cant spy on its citizens, the US does it and sells them the data

that way the government can always get what it wants

Yip, and yet I do not live in the US, Canada or the UK either. Companies Google and Facebook have been in trouble because of how they have handled data in Ireland before and investigations have been conducted because of issses like these.

My issue is that most companies flounder these laws because they are based in another country, hence my want for a little online privacy. Its not much but its enough for the moment.

if you really want to keep your stuff private you should be using TOR, with a VPN, with a browser inside a virtual machine

the virtual machine acts like a barrier between the internet and your actual PC

its the safest way
