Hey y'all, So lately my system has been running poorly in borderlands 2 with drops to 30fps and i had no idea why. So i check my BIOS and my RAM is set to something like 1000mhz. So i changed back to its proper 1600mhz and my FPS instantly jumped to 60+. Do RAM speeds really have this much effect because i didn't think they did? Thanks! :)

My motherboard does that to mine as well on default settings.

Unless you're using an APU it shouldn't have much effect.

As far as I know, RAM speeds stop affecting performance to a measurable degree AFTER 1866MHz(a small improvement from 1600MHz, but not much). Using 1000MHz RAM might actually cause a significant performance drop, but I'd have to test it more to be sure.

Not so much the speed, most issues with ram stem from incorrect settings on the motherboard, which include timing and voltage, these two can cause all sorts of problems.  By resetting the ram to it's optimal settings you may have just corrected a timing or voltage issue.

You sure it was at 1000MHz, that seems like a weird value.

Also Linus did a video using DDR3 800MHz ram and there wasn't that much of a performance impact.

Unless you're using the integrated graphics of an APU, ram speed doesn't really matter.

The stars died for you to be here today.

As mr moose basically said, more than just the speed was probably changed and when you changed it back to 1600 it set those other things back to what works better. I highly doubt going from 1600 to 1333 does anything even because my G3258 which only supports up to 1400 does a lot better than when I had an amd processor with 2133 ram. There were other factors in there of course but yah...

G3258 @ 4.5 | 8GB Team Vulcan RAM | 128GB Kingston V300 SSD (I didn't know what I was doing when I bought it) | MSI H81I Motherboard | Corsair H55 with Noctua NF-P12 | EVGA SSC GTX 960 4GB | OCZ 550W Fully Modular PSU with Noctua NF-A14 | Cooler Master Elite 130 (Soon to be something cool)
