Did you know ? PSU Fans

Did you guys know that in Power Supplies Units. You can actually if you have any old PSU you can actually take the fan from the
PSU and plug it into and use it for your computer ?
 

I did this with a very old PSU from a 2005 computer. I noticed that it wasn't really screwed in and was just flopping around. And once I fully removed the entire PSU casing, the fan is connected to a three pin adapter! And it works!  It's pretty interesting to be honest. So yea if you have any old PSU's you can steal some fans and use them for cooling your PC ^~^

Wouldn't really call $20 or so for 1-2 high quality fans a "minuscule amount"

I have around 20. I harvest any that aren't grinding. Sometimes, they are nice ones. Usually just a run of the mill fan. Plugs vary slightly, and some are soldered on. I usually give the LED ones to friends.

You can most just have a 2 pin mini connector rather than the regular 3 pin or 4 pin, but it works the same way just without an RPM wire usually. Either you might need to re-pin them or get an adapter.

It's less than a decent meal out, for something that'll last years.

Those capacitors can hold a ton of charge. If you open it and it's not discharge or something you could get seriously injured. Or die. Or both.

Psh, $20 could feed me for 3+ days easily. (Though maybe a day and a half if its only fast-food depending on what I get)

 

Although I'm also rather skinny and don't care much for that crazy expensive food.

Yep. And if you want you can even upgrade the fan in your psu to some Noctua's and get super silence.

I use to be in the same camp of NEVER EVER OPEN PSUS OR YOU'LL DIE but actually almost all modern ones have a bleed resistor in them which discharges the caps if you leave it unplugged for a while.

 

But definitely agree to be cautious and don't do so if your not confident.

Its fine its been unplugged for about six months lol

Well and of course am going to let it discharge for a few days. That would be like trying to take apart a car while the engine was still running five mintues ago.

If you want them to be 3 pin fans, just without RPM cable:

Haha, expensive is a very relative term. I don't find that expensive at all.

Fast food is not food at all. I could never eat that for three days. That's disgusting..

depends on where you live. here i could eat for a week, two if i stretch it, on 20€

 

Its a cool little trick. also, if you have a psu with an annoying fan, you can just change it out
