I was wondering if anyone knows of a powerful free video editor because windows movie makers isn't cutting it anymore

Linux apparently has a lot of good FoSS video editing software

avidemux, cinelerra, kdenlive, blender

I wouldn't really recommend Blender for video editing. (well, 3D modelling/SFX maybe, but not bog standard edits)

Honestly I would look into purchasing something, sony movie studio is often found very cheap and is very good

It's even on Steam, although I'd recommend finding 12 instead of 13. 13 is a bit.... shit.
