Im building a new computer and bought an 8gb stick of RAM. I also have an old computer with 2gb and another with two 1gb sticks in it. My motherboard has slots for 4 sticks of RAM. Can i combine these sticks to make 12gb? Im just not sure if it is practical or even allowed to combine an 8gb stick and 1gb stick. What do you think?

if you put two different sticks in the same MOBO, the RAM will run at the slowest speed and capacity. so if you combine a 1600mhz 4GB and a 1333mhz 1gb it'll see it as a total of 2GB 1333mhz.

tough please don't quote me on this, i've never tried it myself! i'm only saying this because i've read it on the forum somewhere!

read my post again. i mentioned capacity.

That's what i'm getting at. Combining a 4GB stick and a 1GB stick is 5GB total. That's the capacity.

Its not bad to mix & match RAM but its not highly recommened either. If you do just make sure the sticks run at the same speeds

but the system will only read it at the lowest of the dimms, being a 1GB. so it'll see the 4GB one as a 1GB one, making a total of 2GB.

The only thing that is true in your post is the frequency, nothing more.

You can have a 4GB dimm and a 2GB dimm and your system will have 6GB of ram.

No it wont. Many people have a 8GB stick and a 4GB stick giving them 12GB total.

It does not do that. How do you think they make 3,6, and 12 gb systems. They don't sell sticks with those capacities.

Make sure all has same MHz and CL or you are doomed and even then you most check them in a program!
