New Builder, Rig Sugestions

Hi guys,

I'm new to building to computers and I was looking to spend $1000-$1500 on a rig.

Any suggestions, looking mainly for a quality gaming rig. Maybe some light video editing.

Peripheral suggestions as well.

Cheers.

sorry for repost

i7 4770k for sure, just to future proof for next generation games and a gtx 770, with a SSD, rest is up to you

I dunno, Maybe something like this? this isn't including an optical drive or the os......... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1jdKa and obviously you could add a ssd or go for a 770.

Light video editing does not mean you should just stick an i7 in there. The 4670k is still a powerful cpu and will do the task just fine.

Fractal Design R4 is my favorite case. However, if you ever want to get a custom water cooling loop in the future, I'd recommend a Fractal Design R2 XL. It's the R4 but bigger. Corsair 800D and 900D are fantastic cases too, but R2 / R4 are silence optimized.

Some people can do custom loops in the R4, but just depends on how much you have in there I guess.

GTX 680 can be found for cheap, still runs everything fine imo. 780 would be ideal or AMD equivalent.

16GB of RAM @ 1600MHz. 8GB is enough for gaming most of the time, 16GB is basically the only part you can really "future proof".

Motherboard and processor depends on what you want to do with the computer. I like Sabertooth for the 5 year warranty and such. A lot of gamers like ROG boards. an i5 K series processor is probably the most you need for gaming.

Budget is helpful though.

Desktop: Intel i5-3570K (stock) | Asus Sabertooth Z77 | G.Skill RipJaw 16GB 1600MHz | Samsung 840 120GB | EVGA GTX 680 SC+ 2GB | Fractal Design R4 | Windows 8 Pro (soon to have dual boot Mac OS X)

Retina Macbook Pro : Intel i7-3840QM | 16GB 1600 MHz | 256GB SSD | Nvidia GT 650M 1GB | Mac OS X 10.8.5

Do you need an OS? What peripherals do you need?

Other preferences?

I've gotta say that pcpartpicker site is the bomb.  I'll probably use that to help plan my next build.  Amazing.

You might want to head over to the Audio section to ask a new topic while providing your tastes in sound so they could help you find an appropriate headset + sound card: http://linustechtips.com/main/forum/40-audio/

The people over there are better than me for these things. Good luck.

You can quote me on this....Games are starting to leverage as many cores/threads available. i7 is a must if you want to future proof, light video editing just sweetens the reason to get an i7, I'm experienced with picking parts so I know not put a strong CPU if they can't fully utilize it.

Even though new games can take advantage of more cores, many games cannot take advantage of hyperthreading. If you really want more cores for gaming, look to AMD.

The i7 performs only ~20% better on average for video editing needs and is much more than 20% more expensive than the i5.
