Facebook Lite uses less storage and bandwidth for emerging markets

fblite_hero.jpg

On one hand, I love that Facebook is working on a lighter app that isn't as resource intensive for the phone or for the network, on the other its kinda embarrassing that Facebook needs a whole new app just to get over the fact that their current app is a bloated mess on all platforms.

Come on guys, you have several billions to play with. Is a ground up rewrite for iOS and Android and WP too much to ask? Maybe it is. Hey, I'm not in a developing country yet I would love the ability to stifle Facebooks usage to the bare minimum too.

Facebook's regular Android app just uses too much data and storage for devices in developing areas. It also tends to eat up a good bit of pricey data. To remedy those connectivity woes, the folks in Menlo Park announced Facebook Lite: a version of the mobile software that's less than 1MB is size, yet still offers the social networks essential tools. Despite requiring a modet amount of space and time install, even on a slow network, the app still handles News Feed, status updates, photos, notifications and other items users employ on the regular. In addition to this new software, Zuckerberg & Co. are also behind the Internet.orgproject that's bringing free access to essential services to underdeveloped countries, too. Facebook Lite is rolling out today in Asia, and it's set to hit parts of Africa, Europe and Latin America in "the coming weeks."

I'd certainly like a rework.  On my old Motorola Droid 3 I had to uninstall because it was using too much RAM.  On my OnePlus, I find that it's ridiculous how much RAM it uses, and I'm still pissed that we need a separate app to send messages.

I'm sure this was posted before. And even if it wasn't, this is practically a bookmark to the mobile version of the FB website, in a very bad browser with very bad resolution. To top it off barely runs at 30 fps even on high-end devices.

I would say so... to a point where it's Microsoft developing the Windows Phone version. Facebook at released the Messenger app.

It would be nice if their official app on Android (maybe this "new app" route is for the better) would allow me to actually upload photos without that disgustingly nasty recompression/resize stuff they do to it.  At this moment, for me to avoid the picture getting butchered, I have to upload it through Facebook Mobile, a process that takes a bunch more steps.
