So today was meant to be a day a celebration, we were getting a new pet, a pineapple McCaw.

She arrived at 8am this morning and immediately took to us, she spent 20 minutes on my shoulder and Nuzzled us all, she was beautiful.

After 20 minutes I put her in her cage and went into the other room, as I opened to door I heard a panicked squawk and turned to see my faithful and loyal dog had somehow got hold of her in her cage, pulled her head through the bars and broke her neck, right in front of my eyes.

Suffice to say I am truely devastated by what's happened, she was 10 weeks old and never even lived her life. Now the dog has never given us any cause the think she would do that, she's 8 years old and really friendly, heck she even lies in the back yard with the next door neighbours cat and sleeps.

Now I'm torn, I love my dog but today I'm wondering if I want to keep her or not. I blame myself more than her for putting her in that situation but she killed it and she intended to kill it, that was obvious.

All I can think is she should be here with us now, getting to know us and instead she's with the vet.

I'm really truly upset about it and I'm so angry at myself for doing that to a beautiful animal.

Thanks for reading.

We had this happen as well.

Our dog was 10 and really friendly but didn't really look after the bird when they first met.

The dog managed to kill one and the other escaped.

But when we got two new birds we looked after them and fairly quickly our dog just lost interest in them, and is fine since.

Dude, i'm sorry for your loss. :( But i think it's just animal instincts that dogs attack other animals they have never seen before.

Well don't blame the dog, it is still the same loving dog that you had before. You just found out he is not good with birds which allot of dogs aren't. One day 1 of our parrots escaped and landed on a post where 3 big old Danish or whatever you call them in English. Grabbed him and tore him appart. After which they would come and sit on your lap (even though they are like 60kg)

People be looking for a reason to flame.

Damn that sucks. I wouldn't be too angry with the dog, as it doesn't really know any better.

We had a blue fronted amazon, and we always kept his cage up high, out of the reach of our dogs, as we could clearly tell that our dogs were interested in him. Sadly we had to adopt him out when we moved, as our landlords didn't even want us to have dogs, and a bird was just out of the question (blue fronted amazons make a HELL of a mess, and this one like to chew on EVERYTHING)

Aww, that's a real shame. Sorry to hear.

I'm sorry for that poor baby but concerning your dog....

How did she do it? If she was trying to play you can't really blame her. She didn't know it would kill it doing such a thing. If it looked like she was jealous or something I would be concerned about the stability of that animal as well.

edit

I had a duck (yes, a duck and she was wonderful) and my dog had no idea how to play with her. Ended up hurting her a lot but it wasn't intentional. Just something to consider.

You have to train the dog to get used to the new animal, just like you train children how to act around babies and animals. You can't just leave children to their own devices when they don't know any better.

Thanks everyone, good to see a great group of users here :)

As for the dog, I'm not 100%. She waited until I turned my back and it looked like she was intent on killing it but I was on the other side of the room and it was heat of the moment.

I know she was acting on instinct and I blame myself, not her but I'm doubting if she can be trusted now. That said she's curled up next to my bed asleep right now, I'm sure I can forgive her but what if she does it to something or someone else now she's done it once?

You have to train the dog to get used to the new animal, just like you train children how to act around babies and animals. You can't just leave children to their own devices when they don't know any better.

That was the plan but I didn't even get a chance too. Literally first chance she got she took. :(

With someone you mean, if the dog is gonna bite a person? I'm sure she won't, it's a dog, the bird was just food for her not a pet, if is a friendly dog don't worry about it.

But the next time keep it out of reach.
