New 1000$ build maybe?

That build looks great, the only thing you may watn to consider is if you need an extra 8gb of ram compared to 16gb. (Do you need 16gb ram vs 8, I don't)

Yea he definitely needs wifi, but what would be the advantages/disadvantages for downgrading the ram, and possibly upgrading something else?

Get 8GB ram and get a corsair 450D case

Downgrading the ram has no benefits other than less price honestly but if he can spend 1k on it then keep 16GB

 

anything more than 16GB is unnecessary but Personally 16GB is my sweetspot. 8GB is too low for a lot of multitasking

working online, but then again he's the type of guy to have 15 tabs open and 3 games at the same time.

I usually have one game, steam, skype, 2 chromes (each with 2-10 tabs), and a firefox with 2-3 tabs

Build looks good if you take this into perspective, personally I would have downgraded the RAM and if he isn't overclocking, I would get a locked CPU and a lower tier motherboard

On the ssd probs would be windows and maybe a couple games, but i think 120 should do it, what i might end up doing is adding the cooler, and maybe downgrading the motherboard to help out with pricing? which motherboard would be a good one? and njmyers3 i'll probs go with that cooler, i've seen it recommended in a ton of build guides.

Here's a much better rig...the 750ti is a very weak GPU...i think you would be much better with a locked CPU, H97 motherboard...8GB or RAM is all he's ever need...i hooked you up with a 240GB SSD instead of 120GB and now you have a killer GPU to play any modern games:

The OP said he's the Kindda go with 10 tabs open and 3 games. 16gbs would be better. Plus if he has the better CPU the 750ti will,hold up at 1080p and OP could very easily sell or keep the 750ti just in case for a 970 or 980ti when OPs friend gets money. Also I wouldnt get that SSD. Crucial BX100 minimal. Samsung is for most people and Intel if you've got money to blow. His build is fine and I'd go with it if I was him. Makes upgrading insanely cheap and easy in the future.

OP- Nice work, cheap GPU but good for 1080p. Your friend like I said before can upgrade to a 970 for 1080p or if he wants to go to 1440p or 4k he could get a 980ti, it would be as easy and unhooking the 750ti and hooking in the 980ti and getting drivers. Plus a monitor but GPU first.

no he can't because he planned a cheap ass 430w PSU in his build...and BTW good luck running any of the latest AAA titles at 1080p on a 750ti...unless you enjoy low settings and 40FPS gaming.

i mean theres absolutely no point in getting a Z97 board and i5-4690K if you're to go with such a weak ass GPU...better to go with my build, much more balanced and much better performance overall.
