Hey guys. I should really join a car forum too but i haven't done that yet so this is my best place for help as of now. I have a 2008 Mustang v6 and I'm having some problems. I got into the car last night and all the lights were on as normal but once i turned the key everything turned off and went black. I disconnected the battery and then reconnected it this morning and then the same thing happened. Lights were on but everything died the second i turned the key all the way to start it. Any ideas? I checked all the fuses they all look fine. Thanks guys.

Did you remove all the fuses to check them? Does the entire electrical system not work or just the car does not want to start because of some electrical problem?

Well i checked the fuses and all that and there was a relay that was really hot when all the rest were fine. It was the pcm power relay. Sorry idk much about electrical I'm better with mechanical things. Everything else works fine though until i turn the key. And then i have to disconnect and reconnect the battery to get the lights to go back on again.

God I'm too tired for my brain to function but I'll try my best. Gonna look through some electrical diagrams for the car and see what I can do.

Does it start?

Thank you so much. No it won't crank or anything. It's like once i turn the key suddenly the battery is dead. It's not but none of the car gets any power until i disconnect and reconnect it. Same thing happens every time.

Is the battery caked with any substance? Are the wires chewed up or have any cuts and grounding out on the car?

how old is the battery? it sounds like it has enough amps for the lights but not the starter. id say you need a new battery or alternator.

try having the lights on, then turn the radio really high so it pulls a lot of power. does the lights dim/handle that?

Not that i know of. Everything looks fine and there's nothing on the battery.

The battery is like 1-2 years old. The car was running fine though right before this happened. I'll try doing that as soon as i get home. Should only be like an hour maybe.

it's possible the alternator is dying/dead and not giving it a good charge if any.

Could be the batter, could be the alternator, could be the relay you said was hot.

OR

It could be a bad ground wire connection from the negative terminal on your battery to the engine block (or frame, or wherever it connects). I would check that first. Then work from there in order of cheapness.

Specifically, check the end of the ground cable that isn't connected to the batter, as that might be corroded or rusted, and causing the issue.

see if you can force the starter to crank without the ignition via the engine control module (just to see if you can get it to turn at all) if it does I'd say its something between the ignition and the body control module

edit: AKA short the fuse for it (this is very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing though)

That's usually a dead battery. Get a set of jumper cables and have someone else's car on hand to get it running.

Other thing it can be is built up corrosion on the cables and terminals. A can of battery cleaner and a wire brush will solve that.
