GPU Getting Extremely Hot

Go to solution Solved by EarthboundHero,

Alright so, I don't know if it was because of the fans or if today was just cooler than yesterday, but my temps are down to 76 max. I added 2 140's in the top as exhaust and have a big box fan blowing on me and thus some incidentally goes to the PC.

Hey guys, so in the U.S. it's getting pretty close to summer. And me being me, I have the hottest room in the house. It's impossible for me to get air conditioning in here as I have no windows. So, my ambient temps are high to say the least. Anyways I was just playing The Witcher 2 (A bit late, I know.) and my GPU got up to 82C before I quit the game. That's higher than I'd like anything to get. The fan speed was 100% too. Previously I maxed it at 75C. My GPU is a Gigabyte R9 280 Windforce. The rest of my build is in my signature. Any way to keep it cooler?

Try dissembling the cooler and clean the heatsync of dust, and apply new thermal paste.

Like Linus did in this video

i TOTALLY feel you bro, my room is the hottest during the summer, coldest in winter, its rough to say the least

there are a few things you could do

1. reapply the thermal paste to make sure thats not your initial problem

2. take off your side panel and get a lil desk fan to blow air right onto your gpu (ik it sounds ghetto but that shit actually works like nothing else)

Get some more case fans to move the hot air out of the case.

Could you post a picture of your case? My GPU was overheating and after adding a fan to the side panel it is all good (82*C isn't bad for a card). To stop the fan from raging at 100% I suggest you download something like the MSI afterburner and make a custom profile for your fan

Thermal paste...

I've replaced it the NH-T1 about a month ago already.

add fans remove dust

dont ercommend taking off cooler

Barely any dust. I have 2 spare 140MM fans, should I toss them into the top is exhaust?

Try dissembling the cooler and clean the heatsync of dust, and apply new thermal paste.

Like Linus did in this video

I've done that pretty recently.

Haha same problem with me. Though I can handle temps pretty well myself, my electronics can't.

Problem with #2 is there's no room on my desk for that. And I've already done thermal paste. I've also removed my OC.

I have an Enthoo Pro with a 200MM in front intake, and a 140 Noctua in back exhaust. I also already have Afterburner installed and have it sert to go to 100% at 80C. I heard not to let GCN 1.0 get above 80C.

Get some more case fans to move the hot air out of the case.

80 degrees won't hurt it, as long as it's not artifacting or crashing it's fine.  GPu's have been able to get into the low-mid 90s for a loooong time.

Are you running with v-sync etc?  Having a framerate cap could reduce the GPU load quite a bit and help reduce temps.  I'm sure a 280 is powerful enough to run Witcher 2 60 FPS without a huge headache. (Atleast at 1080p)

Could also try downclocking it.
