Are 27" 1080p monitors that bad?

Hello,
I have been looking around and doing some research on what monitor I want for my upgrade I'm going to get in a bit.

I noticed a lot of people saying that the 27" monitors at 1080p are "grainy" and I was wondering are 1080p 27" monitors

really that bad? I currently have 27" 720p LCD TV as my monitor and its okay. nothing special but does the job.
I ask if the 27" 1080p monitors are bad because i know any monitor with 1440p are usually above the $300 range.

My budget really is around $250-300. My next Upgrade is either a gtx960 or gtx970 but thats another topic for another

place and another time.

In my opinion, yes. At a normal viewing distance of 2-2.5 feet, you can assuredly discern pixels. I could when I owned a 27" 1080 monitor.

The pixel density (or lack thereof) just isn't enough for that form factor. I've always said 27" should be reserved for 1440p and above.

i have a 24 inch 1080p monitor and i can notice pixels on a blank screen, in game or watching a video, not so much

but the smaller the screen the better.

u want a high pixel density for best quality

People will tell you not that it's grainy, but that you start to see pixels, because the PPI is too low. I have a 27" panel at 1080p, and I personally think it looks great. It's not 1440p, nor 4K, or any ultra-wide resolution, but it was also about $400 cheaper than any 1440p panel, and it's also IPS. IPS isn't really for gaming, but I do more picture and video work than I do gaming, so it suits me well. I'd say that 27" with 1080p is fine, but to go for 1440p is possible. Which, for the average consumer, it isn't. I have the Acer H276hlbmid by the way.

I wouldn't hesitate. Good PPI, IPS panel, respectable response time and on sale to boot.

It could be a little more ergonomic, but if the lack of height adjust doesn't bother you-- go for it.

It's a matter of opinion, and it also depends on viewing distance. MOST people who say 1080p looks horrible at 27" have never actually used 1080p on a 27" monitor, they just say it because everyone else says it. Some people have actually used a 27" 1080p monitor, and they're entitled to their opinion, although I've met people who think 1080p looks horrible at 24" and even at 21.5" so... yeah.

Like I said it also depends a lot of viewing distance and eyesight, depending on how far back you sit it may look better or worse in your situation than for other people who comment on the matter. Personally, 1080p at 27" doesn't really bother me.

They're fine.

I have the Benq XL2720Z.

If I could choose between the 24" and 27" 1080P's I'd choose the 27" EVERY time.

That way I don't have to worry about gamma degradation as the refresh rate increases (this happens a lot on the 24" panels by AU Optronics; the 27" panels are not affected!)

Personally I use a 27" hp 27xi at 1080p and I don't see any problems with it.  However, I've never seen a 1440p screen so I really have nothing to compare it to.  Text appears perfectly clear and it's sitting right next to my 28" 1920x1200 monitor.  They both look pretty much identical as far as clarity and sharpness. I cannot distinguish pixels at 27" either, and I have it sitting about an arm's length away.

Now if it was sitting next to a 27" 1440p monitor, I'm sure I would think it look bad but all by itself I don't see how anyone could have a problem with it.  Just my opinion though, to each their own.

You're ignorant to higher resolutions in that form factor, therefore you cannot know because you've never witnessed first-hand. This is not intended to be negative. :)

If you saw a 27" 1440p and 1080p monitor side by side-- you'd surely prefer 1440p. I was overwhelmed with happiness the first time I witnessed 1440p.

Most definitely, I even stated that. I got my 27xi for $100 off craigslist, if I could find a 1440p monitor for around that price I would prefer it for sure

Find me a 1440p monitor that can strobe with motion blur reduction from 50hz to 144 hz in 1 hz increments then I'll be all over it.

Until then I will always prefer my 1080p 27" because it does things NO 1440p monitor can do.

I agree with this. I've had a 27" 1080p. I saw pixels on the desktop but couldn't tell that much for gaming. I think its fine. I sat a fair ways back and didn't have a problem. Get what suits your needs.
