Help on new PSU

Go to solution Solved by ZetZet,

The CM one says its Gold, but i thought its  marketing trick, so i didn't include it to the post.

cooler master v750 is one of the best psu's out there. Bronze, Gold ratings are not marketing tricks they are actual ratings of efficiency.

Hi everyone. So my question is: How do i know im looking at a quality psu that will work form me? I am planing on geting an Asus R9 290X and later to upgrade my motherboard and cpu so i can run 4k. Trough my current psu is not even going to work for the video card. Its a crappy one 600W. Im looking at Thermaltake Smart SE 730W(or Cooler Master V750S /750W) and it all looks good on the picture, but how do i know expet the watts that it will last, and it will be the one i need. And lastly if those two turn out to be crappy for the job, would you suggest a psu in that price range.

I would go with the Cooler Master over the Thermaltake if those are your two options.  I'd also look at the EVGA SuperNova 750w : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G28N0668&cm_re=evga_supernova_750-_-17-438-017-_-Product.

Honestly you'd even be able to get away with a good quality 650w gold rated PSU as well.

PSUs are given efficiency ratings 80 plus: (Bronze silver gold platinum titanium) based on their efficiency rating at 20 , 50 and 100% load.  80 plus Gold is a good solid price to performance ratio for consumers.  (Platinum and titanium can get very pricey.)

80+ only tells you how much more it will draw from the wall we runnning on 100% load compared to what your system gets.

Any powersupply that says 600 Watts (80+ or not - it doesn't matter) will give you 600 +/- 10 Watts to deliver to your system

the same for 400 Watts 700 Watts...

the difference is what it draws from the wall.

600 Watts for your system with an 80% efficiency will draw about 750 Watts from the wall as an example but

all these values are individually different for each powersupply.

You won't notice the difference between Bronze and Gold. The difference between the Thermaltake and Cooler Master, is that the Smart SE is on about the same quality level as the Corsair CX, while the Cooler Master V are much better. The fully-modular V however (made by Seasonic) are noticeably better built then the semi-modular V (made by Enhance).

The 80 plus ratings are nice, but not a mark of quality, they are just ratings of how efficient they are at converting the power from the wall to power for your pc. There are crappy power supplies out there with 80+ ratings. The CM psu should be great for your build though. Evga supernova gs or g2 power supplies are also great.
