what's the current state of the GOG service? as I can get witcher 3 way cheaper for it!

just wondering what people's download speeds are like?

if it's anything like uplay I'll stick with steam!!

the drm free is a selling point though

How is it anything like UPLAY - the main problem with UPLAY is DRM

GOG is great, download speeds I get the same as steam - the new galaxy client works really well, and organises game libraries easily - and you can backup your games etc

going forward I am going to start getting more games on GOG unless they require steam/uplay/origin - if I can get DRM free, I will

GOG is DRM free, you don't need to use the client. DL speeds are very good. Also the developers get a bigger income, since they own the GOG platform if that matters to you.

I didnt forget it :P its on the second line :D but yes its 100% optional so you dont even have to use it!!

I am now backing up my game installs on a spare hard drive so that I always have my copies no matter what happens

On topic...

how can it be DRM free? Isn't it the game makers that set the copyrights and digital rights and etc?

Games that require DRM are not on GOG - not all games are there

GOG.com is owned by CD Projekt red, they have a strict no DRM policy and so will their service considering that CDPR bailed them out(GOG).

To be fair, GOG has some drm too. But not always online or requirement for any client to be running when gaming. Only thing is close to old school cdkey which they use to verify that its legit.

CD Projekt founded GOG...

Apparently the games were locked with encryption before launch day, and they are using game keys as well. So it's not DRM free...

Doesn't matter though; as long as it doesn't inconvenience the users.

It's DRM free as encryption to prevent early release isn't DRM.  There's no "rights" to manage except the release date where everyone in the world will then be able to play.

Same here, and there have been times when the presence of DRM has stopped me from buying.

It would never stop me buying a game, as I will put up with DRM to enjoy the game experiance

For what it's worth, I thought the same thing when I read the OP. If DRM-free is a selling point, then it's already nothing like Uplay.

Sorry to nitpick, but to be clear GOG and CD Projekt Red are owned by CD Projekt.

DRM is Digital Rights Management. You have the game purchased. You have the game on your hard drive. And this artificial construct is preventing you from playing it until X time. That is DRM, it's limiting what you can do.

Again; I don't have a problem with it. I am only bothered by DRM when it unreasonably inconveniences me.
