Sometimes in concerts one instrument will overpower the others. I was wondering if you guys like when the bass is "overpowering" or at least compared to the studio recording?

Here's a few examples that I personally love how they sound:

How do you guys feel? Anyone else like that or am I just a bit odd?

I like a slightly warmer sound when listening to music. I like the bass to be prominent, but not super overpowering. I feel like stuff just starts to sound muddy and unenjoyable when everything else gets drowned out in bass

I really like balance, with maybe a slight tendency for a bit more treble. This is how it goes in my car, although I do have 2 12" subwoofers.

My brother's subs are much more overpowering, but he listens to rap. I still consider it significantly worse in my ears, though.

Soundboard audio is not an accurate representation of the audio if you were at those concerts in person.

I know. The Fall Out Boy show I went to had the bass like in the video I linked. I love it but some friends are split on it

That was my second of 3 concerts :D

Depends a lot on the song.

In the case of most death metal songs, it doesn't sound good when the bass is overpowering

Original

But there some metal songs where more powerful bass can have a great effect.

I enjoy the fan mixed variants with enhanced bass on this album because it's more or less non-existent on the official album.

The overpowering bass is because of the way live audio speakers interact with recording devices: they quickly overwhelm them with bass but if you're actually there the experience is 100% different: I've been on metal gigs where I could not hear much bass as I was overwhelmed by mids and highs really fucking loud and when I got home and I check any kind of live footage including my own, it's all fucking bass and the guitars are just gone.

I've been to a few shows, Fall Out Boy had the bass like that in person and it sounded the same

I listed the few shows I've been to up above in another reply

Yeah

James' and Lars' egos wanted their instruments dominating the mix which left poor Jason's bass nowhere to be heard.

I think they said it was more of a haze the new guy thing... I mean it was the album after cliff burton died...but that's a reasonable conclusion

That was also a big contributor; Jason was the scapegoat.

Lars' drums are way too prominent even on Death Magnetic.

He hits them so hard they have to replace the heads every few takes.....he hits those things like he hit napster..

I wouldn't object if he wasn't legally allowed withing 100 meters of a drum set.

Maybe they could go the megadeath route, and put a drummer on the drums.

It doens't even have to be someone like Adler, I mean rick allen could still do better with 1 less arm than he currently has. Yes, 0. He'd drum with his dick or something
