Hey guys, I acquired a sempron 145 for 7 bucks today and was wondering what I could pair it with to be a cheap build for a htpc or something.

What do you guys think?

Semperon 145 needs a am2+/am3 board correct? any recommendations for a cheap board I'd probably overclock a bit since this cpu is sooo low tdp I could do that with a stock cooler I have laying around.

Is there a how much ram do you think this build should have also? 2gb? 4gb?

Additional Notes: I want to put this in a picture frame or something I think so I can hang it on the wall by the TV.

Sempron*

Take 2 GB of RAM and use it for the TV, it'd handle 1080p

Unless you want to play some lottery and spend some extra bucks on the mb to try to unlock a 2nd core

Thanks,

I have no clue on what mobo to pick up...or where to pick one up that won't cost an arm and a leg.

My alternative plan with this build was to be an full NES emulator with 655 NES games on it (Call me crazy), otherwise would this suffice for a daily computer for most things (facebook, excel, word, email).

it only handle 1080p with decent gpu

if you have 760G motherboard, you out of luck to play HD content with that, 760 Motherboard GPU doesn't support video accelerator

from AMD/ATI side (HD 4550 is the lowest GPU that have video accelerator)

and from nvidia side, GeForce 8600/9400.

low tdp? if you compare to Athlon, then yes, but Celeron/Pentium? no.

I have sempron 140, got it for $15 back couple years ago, and regret it eversince. (I just want to use it as a backup before I get Vishera, but that's never happen)

what about an 880G or something will that work for 1080p

Assuming you don't have a motherboard, I'd get a cheap (but good!) AM3+ board and then pair up a low end GPU with it. Onboard craphics are terribad, especially for a HTPC. And while you're at it, 2GB will be fine, but 4GB will never be a bad idea.

I have an extra 4gb ddr3 stick sitting here, I'll use that if the mobo needs ddr3 i guess, otherwise I was thinking about ddr2 memory for the older boards. Any particular chipsets to look out for, there are quite a few, I know the 990x are high end ones, not sure what the 970, 960, 890x, 760, chipsets are really.

I'd just go with almost anything from Gigabyte and ASUS for AM3+.

Oh, Okay :D been looking at an asus one, and an MSI one

Thanks for the help, I'm reading up on the some of the chipsets, but for the most parts its southbridge/graphics changes between them

785/880 would work, but it perform varies depend on motherboard brand

it's kinda weird how it works since it just same chipset.

oh btw... only for windows, I've tried several times with linux distro... it just perform really bad for HD content.

it's been problem since 780 and AMD never really improved it eversince, so in the end... you might add external GPU for it.

anyway, good luck.
