RAM affecting peformance?

Go to solution Solved by nunya bus,

I would honestly save your bios as is. then I would reset it to all auto defaults. and go from there

You know you might be running 4.4ghz, but as you can see, whoever set that overclock up had to nerf the Northbridge so hard, its affecting system performance really bad!
The northbridge is pretty much the memory controller. so yeah save the bios in your bios software for windows, what ever brand you have. then as I said. go back to stock. and leave everything as auto, set the Dram voltage if its 1.6v and set the ram speed as you should, and then re run CPUz and see if the NB freq is back to normal. play GTA V again and see how it is.

4.4ghz might sound great to all your mates, but if you have to nerf the base clock and NB to the point its useless, its going to degrade your experience. so back to stock. and do a small multiplyer jump until you hit 4ghz then be happy with that...
and anyway. if you have bette cooling or water cooling. its going to turbo boost to 3.9ghz as long s it stays in thermal limits. which means it will auto overclock for you anyway. you dont have to do all the old skool overclocking anymore

I don't believe there's 800mhz ram for ddr3, If it's in dual channel it should be @ 1600mhz.

Maybe at that speed, but not by much. What CPU do you have though? 800mhz isn't very common for DDR3 and you won't get DDR2 1600mhz. If that's the case then it's more than likely your CPU that will be the bottleneck which is limiting your performance ingame.

if your ram is running at 800mhz, then I would have a look at the sticks of memory, see what they are, and increase the speed (ram that fits in that system is AT MINIMUM 1600MHZ
and if you load up CPUZ click memory tab, and see if it says dual or single channel. if its in single channel, you will need to move 1 stick into a different slot, and that will bring a lot of performance
so check in CPU  Z and get back to us

I didn't buy new RAM when I built this PC, it's from an old computer from about 3 years I had laying around.

Oh and I already posted a SS from CPU-Z, just in case, there you go :D http://imgur.com/29MxESR

They're running at 1600mhz and not 800mhz. DDR = Double Data Rate and the 800mhz you see is doubled to make 1600mhz.

Cool that all looks like mine except 1 thing. your NB frequency is 800mhz where mine is 3499.2mhz so somewhere your bios settings are screwed up

Oh okay, but I still have performance issues, could this old ram cause it? I took it from my old computer from about 2-3 years.

Will upgrading it to a newer ram increase my performance?

The ram shouldn't really affect performance.

What could It be then? Everything except the RAM is new, I built the PC only a few month ago, I don't think an i5 4690k could bottleneck a 970, and it's not overheating as I have a H100i Cooler.

Could it be the PSU maybe? It's also new and is 620Watts which should be enough for a 970.

What kind of performance issues are you having?

Please don't put everything in bold..

No, it's either your CPU is bottlenecking you, or you are expecting better performance at the graphics settings you are running than what are actually obtainable.

Is your cpu overclocked?  What are you cpu and gpu load temps?

I have some FPS stutters in most game, even in CS:GO, from 280 it drops to 250, goes back, drops the 100 sometimes and it makes the game stutter, In BF4 I get about 60-70 fps with drops. while my friend who has the same GPU gets 120 FPS on same settings.

I also got a 144hz monitor so I'm trying to get the most out of my games.
