AMD fx-6300 running hot

SkixAces

I recently noticed my AMD fx-6300 is running quite hot while playing games.

First it ran at ~68 degrees, but since recently it hits 75.

I have its overclocked to 4.2GHz and 1.37V

Are these temps normal?

Im  using Core Temp to messure the temps, and it tells me the Tj. max is 83 degrees.

Also, does lowering my voltage decrease my temps? As I think it can go lower, since I set it at 1.37V and never changed it because it was stable as it was.

Btw, it cant be dust because I cleaned the pc 2 weeks ago!

EDIT: I also noticed my idle temps are waaaay lower now. First they were ~40. Now its 23 :/

You shouldn't be hitting 70c with an AMD chip. What cooler are you using?

Try cleaning off the thermal paste and applying new stuff.

Stock cooler with stock thermal paste :/

Yeeeaahhh might want to do something about that, especially if the stock cooler is just the standard aluminum one without heatpipes. It wasn't meant to handle a 125W TDP.

That is a bit warm, but if you are doing overclocking (or using the stock cooler) 70's is reasonable.  More to the point, mid 70's while under load isn't gonna break the chip anytime soon.

It's not recommended to exceed 65c for extended periods of time on FX chips, never mind mid 70s.

WAIT WHAT WOW, HOW ARE YOU MAGICALLY OVERCLOCKING WITH STOCK STUFF AND NOT REACHING 80'S AND 90'S UNDER LOAD!?!?! xD.  But yeah, getting your cooling stuff replaced isn't a bad idea.  It shouldn't be an emergency unless your 6300 starts throttling or causing your machine to shut down.

are you using a cooler? i would hope so if you OC

No, its stock cooler, but it used to be fine. I have this overclock since januari and it never exceeded 68 degrees (most of the time 65)

Im not sure if it is because of the game I played the past few days (the witcher 2 on max settings) but now it hits 75 degrees under load, and strangly enough, 23 degrees on idle.

After making that screenshot, I noticed my clock speeds are very low now. Normally they are 4.2GHz while idle

4,2GHz while idle is bad.

Shall I just remove my overclock and put amd turbo boost on? I reckoned 4.2GHz would be a good overclock since the boost clock is also a modified 4.2GHz xD

Thats the problem, FX chips don't have a TjMax so different binned chips with different ASIC qualities (silicon lottery) will throttle at different temps.

So should I remove my overclock for now, and buy a new cooler soon, and in the meantime use the amd turbo boost feature. Or is it safe to us this oc? Btw, I havent noticed any lag while it was at those high temps, so it isnt throttling

OK, didn't know what was recommended for fx chips (I have more personal experience with intel).

Anyone?

It seems like the temps are 68 now again in the witcher 2. Idk why they were 75 yesterday, but it may happen again.

Do I need to delete my oc or is this a safe temp?

Personaly I wouldn't even think about over clocking with stock cooler. A hyper 212 evo was definitely worth it for me and brought my Max temps down to 45 from 60 with the stock cooler.

Your solution that everyone has pointed out is to get an aftermarket cooler for it if you're going to overclock. If you don't want to get an aftermarket cooler than get rid of the overclock and use the stock speeds. AMD = Lots of heat.
