My g1 970 has a plate that's a little short for my r4 case in length and so my gpu won't fit into the motherboard http://m.imgur.com/tAL3RWu,LHG7ZDk,4fXmaRF

Which "plate" do you mean? The PCI slot plate?

Normally this shouldn't be an issue as the sizes are standardized.

Dumb question but: did you take out the Thumb Screws on the PCi slot? Can the bottom of the PCI slot cover properly slide down inbetween motherboard and Case?

who cares...

You've to take two of your PCI-e slot covers out of your case. They're held in by screws. Then simply push the card in.

I don't have thumb screws on my pci slot it's an asus z97-a

It doesn't matter if they have thumb screws or not. Also it's not your motherboard that has them. Your case has PCI-e slot covers that you can remove with screws.

They look like this:

1st pci slot, haven't tried others, the issue is that the metal plate where I used the thumb screw is too short in length

So just to be sure we are talking about the same thing. That thing is too short? (see pic)

Because that is almost impossible. :D

My 750ti fit at an angle but this wont

If you had trouble with that too the chances are something is installed wrong. Is your motherboard on its standoffs as these are about 3mm high. It's very unlikely that the case is the culprit.
