I started collecting PS2 games again, but want to be able to play them on my monitor.

I just wanted to hear about some possibilities..

Should I get something that converts component/composite video to HDMI or VGA? (I know how to get the sound to 3.5mm).

Or should I try to get a cheap 1st gen PS3? (One that is backwards compatible)

Just wondering about it..

I mean... you could probably run an emulator on your pc especially if you own the games anyway.

PCSX2?

Get something like an El Gato with a breakout cable for component?

Didn't really want to emulate.. I mean I have the games..

(don't have anything against emulating)

I though about an Elgato too, as I have used my friend's already and would know how to set it up..

But that's a pretty steep price still at ~140 euros

I can't say much about PS2 games on PS3 considering I only have a couple, however I found that using component (not composite) cables with a PS2 on an HDTV is actually really good.

You can use the disks for emulation if you wanted to? Hmm. And HD PVR 2 is not much cheaper than an El Gato.. Really any capture card or something that has an hdmi -> component converter would work.

Actually I have never seen a TV with component

Maybe I should look into getting a cheap TV with component that I can put on my other desk..

Yeah, that's true.. PS2 uses regular DVD's I think..

Not sure if my PC can handle PS2 emulation, but will look into it I guess.

You can easily use The PS2's component cable on any TV. For a monitor you could find an adaptor or get an early PS3 (entirely worth it. That thing is still the best game console out there due to backward compatibility alone).

As for emulating, it works reasonably well, but expect issues with emulating audio. I had perfect emulation of the graphics when I tried it, but the audio was a shitshow for whatever reason. If you have the discs of the original games you can use those with the emulators, and is WAY better than downloading the iso files of sketchy sites.

But hardware is always the better way to play imo. Especially with these older games that were actually designed to work on the systems they came out on. *cough* current gen is trash *cough*

Git Gud.

*Shameless advertising* If you do end up trying to emulate, I have a basic tutorial on PCSX2 and setting it up (of course assuming you use your own BIOS & games). I also have a slightly more advanced tutorial teaching how to utilize your CPU and GPU in different ways to prevent bottlenecks as much as possible.

I don't have a TV in my room though :(

I guess I'll browse the Dutch variant of ebay to get something cheap possibly.

Thanks for the info on the emulation too :)

PS3 first gen is perfect for PS2 games (I use it all the time)

If I get one of those, I don't have to get a TV or converter.. Hmm..

(I already have an Ultraslim PS3, so probably hard to persuade my parents though

Oh that's a good point... I think you can do native emulation okayish.

PS2 is like 480p-500-something p at the most IIRC, so possibly..

I will look up the recommended specs for PSX2, thanks for the info.

I'm okay with the shameless plugs :P Will watcth the first tutorial for sure.
