Hello,

My PC is old, and I have actually never had the time to overclock this old cuddly beast.

It is has been years since I overclocked CPUs, and I kinda forgot how to do it properly, and I was wondering if you could help.

System specs:

- Core i7 930 (multiplier increased to 22)

- 1333MHz DDR3 triple channel G.Skill PI F3-1280CL7 - 6GB (2x 3)

- GeForce GTX 680

- Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5 v2

- Nocua NH-U12P. I was told I should be able be able to get 3.8GHz easy with it, when I got my system, based on reviews.

Any help where to start?

Do you have some old settings of your computer form your 920, 930, or even 950 you can share?

Post 16 (bellow on this page) contains what I am trying and failing.

Dont have any Intel cpu but, here is the general idea.

Set the CPU, NB, DRAM, VDDC voltage to manual.

Set the defaul values to your computer

Now, set the Base clock to 100

Loop

Now, increase multiplier by 1

If it boots, do a 30min P95 test and monitor temps

Pass?

Repeat the loop

If it fails, increase the voltage on cpu by a bit everytime.

No boot? Lower Multiplier

Increase Base clock? Increase VDDC also

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

I know Jumper118 and harrynowl know a lot about older CPUs and overclocking, maybe they can be of assistance?

Updated main post with CPU cooler (just in case someone thinks I am using stock cooler. No sir. I intended to OC my system but never had the time :/)

I was wondering, what is "CPU Clock Drive" (measured in mV), "PCI-E Clock Drive" (mV), "CPU Clock Skew" (measured in ps (no idea what 'ps' are)), and "IOH Clock Skew" (ps). Defaults I have are (in order listed): 800mV, 900mV, 0ps, and 0ps. The 2 Clock Skews can be incremented by 50's.

I am in the BIOS now this is what I did.

-> Disable C1E for now

-> Disable C3/C6/C7

-> Set Load calibration to: Level 1

-> Base clock is already by default at: 133 MHz

-> memory is already set to Profile 1 XMP profile

I tried these settings, with a multiplier of 21x

But the system doesn't even boot :(

try increasing the llc level. don't go more than half way though, so if it goes up to level 8 don't go higher than level 4.

if it still doesn't boot try increasing the voltage slightly.

LLC goes up to Level 2 on my side.

I decided to remove RAM OC.. thinking that it would be another variable and causing problems Not sure I can actually do this....

very true.

definitely dont' go higher on the llc, so try upping the voltage a bit if it still doesn't boot

Ok tried increase CPU Voltage from 1.2875 (default) to 1.29375V

if that wasn't enough to get it to boot, then it is likely something else. i'm not an overclocking expert, certainly not with first gen core i cpus. try clearing the cmos and starting over. also is it posting and crashing at windows or not posting at all?

edit:

nvm, if you're getting into bios it is posting.

Actually it was not posting. I get back to the BIOS if the overclock fails. Motherboard feature. It avoids clearing the BIOS all the time. Still has an easy access back button for clearing the BIOS if the auto system fails.

Anyway, above (previous post) is the latest update, and NOW it posts, but BSOD at startup:

BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO, and second time: "The operating system could not be loaded because the kernel is missing or contains errors"

I guess this is memory related BSODs.

one thing that stood out was the cpu thermal monitor being disabled... if that does what it sounds like it does, it might be best to enable it. also the base clock seems too high at 200 mhz.

well, a base clock of 200 mhz at just over stock wasn't helping none either :P

you'll want to take it up slowly, a few mhz at a time. then test for stability.

Intresting! It fails (BSOD), despite being dafault. I guess it is some other setting causing the problem.

i would reset to defaults and try again. slowly increasing the base clock. (i'm assuming that the multiplier is locked right?)
