I recently bought a Pentium g3258 with an H81M - E motherboard (recommendation from "2014 Holiday Buyer's Guide")

I tried overclocking my Pentium chip and I got 4.2 Ghz @ 1.3V (68 degrees on full load) with the CM Hyper 212 EVO.

I have seen other people with the Pentium g3258 but they can reach similar clockspeeds with much lower clockspeeds. (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2389948)

In the BIOS, I only changed the multiplier and the CPU Core Voltage. When I set my Voltage to 1.35V I can get 4.3Ghz. with temps around 75 degrees.

I'm not sure whether I'm not doing the overclocking correctly or that I was unlucky and got a bad chip.

Thanks,

Thomas

Please don't post in multiple sections.

Not all CPUs overclock the same. Maybe you lost on the silicon lottery. Some chips overclock very well, some don't.

Have you tried reseating the cooler?

Welcome to the silicone lottery! And that voltage is a little high for a pentium which explains the HIGH temps for a dual core at those speeds.....

inb4; Thought the G3258 was good because reviewers got binned chips that overclocked like a mofo and didn't heat up.
Enjoy your dual core.

You probably got a bad chip. It's all luck these days.  Also the buyers guide suggest a better motherboard, so you can upgrade to an unlocked i5/7 later on. Just sayin'.
