I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem. I just bought a few games on Steam and am in the process of downloading them. I have a 1 Mb/s connection and have 27GBs of games to download. That'd be fine except that Steam is showing that my peak speed was 500 Kb/s and I am bouncing between 50Kb/s and 200Kb/s. I went to SpeedTest.net and it showed I was getting 650Kb/s download from a server in California (I assume I'm downloading the games from there.) Does anyone know a solution or is it just Steam's servers being overloaded? Either way it's going to take 5 or 6 days to download the games :l.

Edit: Made it less confusing.

Thanks in advance.

Steam's servers are under a heavy load currently.

Ok, so you're paying for 1Mbit?

For example i pay for 60/60 and the max download speed that steam should give me is 7,5MB/s

It's usually put like this: The line you pay for / 8 = Download speed.

Intel i7-2600K @ 4,5GHz | EVGA GeForce GTX 780 w/EKWB Copper Waterblock | Kingston HyperX blu 16GB @ 1600 MHz | Phanteks Enthoo Primo | MSI Z77A-GD65 | CM M1000 Silent Pro | Samsung 840 Pro 128GB | BenQ XL2420T 120hz | Logitech G710+ | Razer Deathadder 2013 -

He likely meant 1MB/s.

And as for the OP, It's the Steam Summer Sale. Of course Steam's servers will be under heavy load. People just bought tons of games and are downloading them now.

Just wait a few days after the sale is over.

No, I believe my parents are paying for "up to" 5Mb/s. I only ever get 1Mb/s though. I kinda feel like giving the company an earful, but, meh.

I haven't had ANY issues with steam along with several other. I get my max speed and sometimes over that.

Make sure you choose the right download server for you:http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

Nort: No, I mean 1Mb/s.

Then you get more than what you should have. It's 1Mb/8 to get the download speed^^

No, because everyone measures it in bits, not bytes

Change download location maybe? I live in North Carolina and I use the New York server over the Charlotte one.

Just because the server is closer doesn't mean it is faster. Also the one you usually use might be under  a heavier load since the sale is going on. Try different servers until you find the best one for you.

I've had horrible issues with Steam. I am using the server closest to me. My download speed fluctuates randomly between not downloading at all (Update Suspended) and 125KB/s which is 1/3rd my max Download speed. It could just be the difference between your server and mine.

I know, but he said "1 Mbit" then said "500kb/s" and didn't use bit. So I assumed he was talking about something he wasn't. Nevermind.

Huh. Isn't that to convert your download speed from Mb to MB?

It is, Steam measures in MB though.

steam usually does that cuz of heavy load

Just an update, I switched my download server from US - Dallas (which I'm 2 hours away from) to US - Denver (which I'm 5 hours away from). It's consistently downloading at 285KB/s.

Try that. Good suggestion.

I checked for the lowest load server I could find in North America, it was in Seattle. I'm still ranging from 75KB/s to 200KB/s. Also, do you know anything about choppy downloads? My download bar (?) shows it downloading in that speed range but than it'll drop to zero and repeat that over and over.
