Is an SSD really necessary?

Is it worth getting a 128gb SSD for $50 if i'm only going to install my OS?

It makes a huge difference in speed coming from a regular HDD.

Or even from a bad SSD...

Sig under construction.

Necessary, no. Worth it? Yes, it's a quality of life improvement. If you do get one you should be able to get to the login screen in about 20ish seconds.

SSD's are best for boot drives, mass storage HDD's are still best for the money (even though im looking to gget a 1TB SSD soon :P )

An SSD is not necessary but they are the single best thing you can do to increase overall system speed and actually notice it in daily tasks.

Honestly, probably useful, but not necessarily. I used to use SSD for my OS, but now I use only HDD after my SSD got screwed up. My computer boots up in about 30 seconds, and I am completely fine with it. If you have the money lying around, go for it. Otherwise, don't break the bank just for slightly faster OS performance.

I know nothing. Assume I am 5 years old without a proper education.

exactly. If your OK with it then thats all that matters. A boot in 30 sec would seem long to me, but im very impatient. My last rig booted in 7-8 seconds :) i miss that

Necessary? Borderline.

Should you get one? Yes, unless you're on a tight budget.
