7.1 Question regarding headset

Go to solution Solved by Volbet,

Thanks for the inputs :D Anyway, any links to good headsets that do real 7.1 over 3.5mm jacks?

There is the Razer Tiamat 7.1. But I wouldn't recommend it. The sound is pretty lacking, it weighs a lot, the microphone is just plain horrible and the USB power has some strange issues.

There is also the Asus Strix 7.1, which I don't have any personal experience with. I'm also uncertain as to how it connects to a computer. My best guess would be with analog jack cables, but I don't know for certain.

For either of these your onboard sound solution will be enough to drive them (if your onboard solution supports 7.1 that is), There won't be a need for a seperate soundcard.

But as @ZetZet said, most 7.1 gaming headsets are mostly a gimmick. For the price of a 7.1 headset, you might aswell buy a pair of good quality open-back headphones and a standalone mic.

Hi,

I'll get straight to the point

-Want Siberia V2 (2.1)

-I know that single driver headset simulate surround with software (they are USB usually)

-I want to buy this: Asus Xonar Phoebus Solo 7.1

-Connect 3.5mm (Siberia V2 2.1) jack to Asus Xonar

-Do I Get 7.1?

I'm bad with audio things.

No, you wouldn't get ´real´ 7.1 surround from that. The Asus Xonar Pheobus supports 7.1 surround via the various jack plug on the back.

So just plugging in the one stereo jack, would only give you stereo.

However, you might still be able to simulate 7.1 surround with software like Razer Surround.

No you don't. You can only get surround with many plugs because one 3.5mm connector is 2 channels (and a mic sometimes). Every single headset surround is a gimmick anyway.

They suck... Get some decent open headphones and you will feel the surround with stereo.

Any stereo headphones with good sound stage and imaging will be able to do surround. You don't need to buy any fancy "7.1" crap for it. Razer Surround software is free and does what you want with any headphones, and most modern games have the headphone surround built-in. You won't even need sound cards unless your on-board chip is broken or getting a ton interference.

Depending on how much you want to spend, Superlux HD668b is cheap and good, next up you would have something like Sennheiser HD518 and if you want to spend more you get to the range where you really have a ton of options. These are open headphones, which are most often the best option for the whole surround experience and gaming. If you live in an extremely noisy environment or have people right next to you when you game, you might want to consider closed options like HyperX Cloud.

7.1 surround is not the only surround, in the sense 'it's 7.1 or no surround at all'. 7.1 is just a popular speaker configuration.

Most FPS already got virtual surround sound engine built-in to them. Look at this:

It's a 2009 FPS, and you can clearly hear positioning and directions based on the built-in audio engine alone. It's called HRTF, head related transfer function. In short, the sound moves and changes according to your 'head' (the game character's head and where you're facing)
