Music OS

So I've seen some videos of old Dell's like mine running operating systems that are supposedly free and basically just for playing music or acting as a "line-in amplifier" of sorts. So I was hoping you lovely people could help me find one of these OSes. It would be cool if I could mount a network drive for files but that is completely optional. Oh, and free would be nice.

I would not trust the on-board audio on an old Dell to work as an inline amp.

I'm pretty sure it requires a good sound card that can do the sampling. And a audio receiver has an amp built into it that will amplify the sound. PC sound cards can not reach the standards that audio receivers exceed. You could get an amplifier separately for the same cost of the receiver.

Try RuneAudio maybe.  Found it on Spatry's Distrohunt site.  Most of the stuff there is usually really good.

I wasn't sure how to word it, but I guess pass through would have been a better word. I need to get the audio from my receiver out over the line out basically.

Actually.. If there's a good free program that runs on XP then that would be fine. Someone told me about one once that had a VUmeter (which would be reaaaaly nice) and it was somewhat advanced. Can't remember what it was for the life of me. Any ideas @GzeroD @MatthewEnderle @AnnoyedShelf

I use foobar2000.  It works on everything from XP to 8.1 I believe.

I use it on my old rig, but I was thinking about something more advanced... Something at least like what's in this video.
