I'm trying to figure out the reason to upgrade from six core overclocked to 4.48GHz to quad core at 4.4Ghz stock. The cpus in question are an old I7-980x and newer i7-4790k.

If I don't intend to overclock the newer one, is there any reason to replace? The old one has more cores, higher clock speed, more cache and triple channel ram.

I don't know much about cpus so I'm probably missing something. Having 4k in mind with two gtx 980 I don't see the advantages of i7-4790k unless you want to overclock it.

Help please

I think there is no reason for you to upgrade. You would get more performance in few games but it is not really worth the cost asi it would not be really big difference. Especialy when you would have to trade 6 cores for 4 cores as more and more games/software can take advantage of multiple cores.

Tnx for quick replies. That was quite informative. So if I mostly need just a few cores (flight simming) I should probably replace.

It's a computer. It comes down to a simple question. Is the cost to replace the component worth it to you?

You will probably enjoy slightly better performance with a 4790k (or 4690k) but if the game is running well then I wouldn't bother. My advice would be to check your loads, if your cpu isn't being pushed to the limit, but your graphics card is, then that's what I would replace first.

Flight sims(and simulators in general) are usually more CPU demanding.

he is right just depends on usage.

depending on the flight sim yes. i'm not sure about xplane but i know fsx uses 4 cores max. overall there might not be any compelling reason to upgrade. have you been having performance issues at all with your i7?

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

No I haven't. But now that my GPU is probably dead, I'll have to upgrade prematurely. So having high resolution and high refresh rates in mind for CV1 in the future, I'm worried about old CPU and SLI in 2.0 PCIe. Which is why I can't decide between full upgrade vs keeping CPU, mobo, PSU and the case. The difference is in a lot of money and it seems quite a a shame if this relatively powerful CPU that cost a fortune back then won't manage VR.

DCS uses only two cores. One for main and the other one for sound.

ah dcs. well, i'd just get the graphics cards and see if the performance is good with your i7 and if it isn't then upgrade to an i5. i think you'll be ok with your i7. from my understanding, you're getting new graphics cards anyway so i'd wait and see how the system performs with your i7 before jumping the gun on the cpu.

Right. And maybe better get just one at first. No need for sli before CV1 is out.
