Okay, so I have an AMD fm2 mobo (Asus F2A55M to be exact) with a 6700 APU with a R9 270x. I am looking to upgrade the furthest I can, and I am stuck going between the AMD 760k and the 6800k APU.

I would like to know which one the nice folks here at the LTT forums think I should get.

I can only do mild CPU overclocks due to power limits as well.

Thank you very much

I'd get the AMD 760k since you don't really need an APU with an R9 270x.

Personally I'd save / wait and get an i3/i5 in a few weeks / months, depending on your income stream.

Reasoning:  They're all Richland based quad cores ranging from 3.7 GHz to 4.1 GHz so for the money you'll be spending the minor improvement probably won't be worth it.

you mean you made the mistake of getting an CPU with red on it. ;)

LOL

I love AMD to the moon and back, but they forgot about L3 cache when making my CPU; which other then that is great. Turbos to 4ghz, 4mb (L2 :'c) cache, decent on board GPU, 32nm lithography, unlocked, etc. etc. Without the L3 cache, though, it's really hard playing open world games. In GTA 5 for instance, with graphical settings turned up, and "CPU intensive" settings turned down, my CPU is at 95-100% work load, whilst my 280x is at around 50% load kinda just chilling.. hahaha

you won't see much of a performance increase from anything on the fm2 socket to be honest. you'd be far better off setting that money aside and saving up for an i3 and a b85 motherboard. you'd have an upgrade path to a great performing cpu (i5 or i7) in the future as well.

My rig:

860k

That motherboard is FM2, not FM2+. Latest it can support is Richland, no Kaveri.

  • 2 weeks later...

The 760k and 6800k aren't much of an upgrade. If you lack power in the cpu department, save up for a platform upgrade like to lga 1150.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/
