Good CPU to get

Go to solution Solved by TheKDub,

right but it sounds like i need something at the range of an i7

If you need an i7, then get an i7 such as the i7 4790K.

Or get a xeon, its basically the same as an i7, it just doesn't have integrated graphics (most of the time), and is locked. (cannot be OC'd)

Hi, I'm planning on making my first build and I have been planning on putting in a 4790K devil's canyon and a requirement/must to have a workstation grade ASUS motherboard. So I was planning on getting the P9D WS for it, but unfortunately does not have the ability to overclock according to some users on the forum. So I'm looking for a work station grade ASUS motherboard and a damn nice processor, I also figure that Xeon processors are server grade and aren't the best for gaming, because apparently fewer faster cores are better. So what I think it comes down to is something that doesn't have too many cores but has enough to handle decent work loads, so should I change the processor?

From what ive heard from others, a Xeon E3 1231 is essentially an i7 4790k which is locked.

i5 4690K is pretty solid.

4 fast cores is the sweet spot for gaming.

The i7 4790K is great too, but due to hardly any games supporting hyperthreading, it's about as powerful as an i5 4690K in games, though for things like video editing, photo editing, etc.. the i7 will shit all over the i5.

the xeon 1231v3 is basically a 4770k

the 1241v3 is basically a 4790k

THE ONLY DIFF is that the xeon can't overclock..and has no built in gpu

if you are gaming

the xeon is a fine cpu

If you need remote help fixing something on your computer

I can help over Teamviewer if you wish

The i5 4690K is pretty much the same as the i7 4790K, except $100 cheaper, and it doesn't have hyperthreading.

Yeah right, some certain Xeons have a built in iGPU.

ones end in 5 and 6 have a iGPU

Well what's the actual use case... I can't see anything in the OP other than a slight mention of gaming.

What's the primary and secondary use of this computer including the specific application.

That post made my day. Just bought a 4690k and was hesitant about it.

For just gaming the i5 4690K and i7 4790K will both run great, it's better to save your money and go for the i5, gaming doesn't need the extra threads which is all the i7 really is, maybe use the extra cash to get better cooling solutions so you can overclock it more, or even just use it to buy a better GPU.

But if you want to use your machine for other stuff which may utilise the extra threads like video editing or stuff like that then 100% go for the i7.

If you haven't purchased the motherboard already and you aren't in a rush maybe you could even wait to see what the skylark gen of intel processors bring, it'll have a different socket, but you will be able to utilise DDR4 ram (Without getting a X series) and it'll use a new chipset with more features. Not the biggest of changes though.

i5 4690k | GTX 980Ti G1 Gaming | 16GB RAM | MSI Z97 Gaming 7 | NZXT Kraken X61 | 850 EVO 250GB x2  | 1TB 850 Evo NZXT Noctis 450 | EVGA 750W 80+ Gold

 Ducky Shine 3 TKL (Browns) | LG 34UC87C | Logitech MX Master ATH-M50x's + DT990 Pro's

Nothing that requires a WS grade motherboard.  I went over this with him in another thread.  He is stubborn.  All he needs is a Z97 motherboard + an i5 or i7.  Thats all he needs, but for whatever reason, he wants to spend $200 just to say he has a workstation grade motherboard.  Its beyond me.

That's what I was suspecting, no mention of pro work in the OP only gaming.

I am here to help even if you can't acknowledge it, anyone else will tell you the same thing based on your needs.

There is nothing you need from a WS grade motherboard.  Buy a Z97 motherboard.

why not work station grade, wouldn't it be better to be prepared incase it comes in handy lol?

For your purposes there's nothing you'd need. You're getting LESS for your money for features you'll never need or use. A comparable Z97 board spec wise is the Z97-A for $100 less.

You probably wont use ECC, VT-d, vPro, RST-E, Node Manager, Intel KVM, Dual NICs or TET.

Workstation boards are very much a thing of "If you need to ask; you probably don't need one".

There is a compromise of sorts available to you if you're looking for that particular motherboard type and brand.

Check out http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_Z97_MARK_2USB_31/

They state it gets out through "server grade tests" so it should suit the same functionality you want without actually being limited in the way WS boards are. There are other versions of it depending on your budget /shrug.

Bear in mind motherboards like the P9D WS don't support overclocking and afaik are locked to 1333/1600 MHz ram as part of their compatibility marketing.

But yeah, grab a Z97 for your 4790k so you can utilise its potential some and take a look at Asus TUF range or even the Maximus VII Formula if that's what you're into. I'm not commenting on price viability just options available.
