newcomer to mechanical keyboard community red or brown cherry mx

Go to solution Solved by Vek1313,

So basically linear means the key will go straight up and down without anything obstructing it.

Tactile means you will have a feedback when the key is pushed down far enough with the browns being a bump and blues being the click you stated in the original post.

I have tested out in a store, reds feel like membrane keys to me. Browns are the perfect in between for me with the quietness of the reds and tactile of blues.

Actuation force is the amount of pressure you have to push down on the key for the keyboard to know that is activated (lack of a better word here) hope I helped. If it's not good enough maybe this website can. http://www.keyboardco.com/blog/index.php/2012/12/an-introduction-to-cherry-mx-mechanical-switches/

I am using a normal dell membrane keyboard and I'm set on getting a mechanical keyboard.

To be specific corsair k70 red LED. However, I live in Egypt therefore I have no possible way of trying out keyboards, shops here do not have this feature

Also I am aware that there is a switch testing device that I can pickup from amazon for roughly 12$, but for me.. I'd pay shipping to Egypt like an extra 15 dollars + taxes and customs it would end up being around 35$ for 4 keys which will be shipped in 2 to 3 weeks minimum which is not an option.

I do not want the cherry mx blues cause of the noise which I did not like in the videos on youtube and so on.

I am torn between cherry mx red and browns and it must be a blind shot.

what is the safest switch?? Also I am a gamer but I chat and type occasionally .. I am aware that switches are a personal preference but i just want to know what is the best possible experience that could come to a first time user of mechanical keyboards after years of membrane abuse

I am very confused and I need a sure answer not something to make me more confused xD I need someone who is sure of what he is saying and determined .. preferably someone who was in my shoes or has a lot of experience in my issue xD

thanks a lot in advance everyone :)

and sorry for my bad English if I made any mistakes, It's my third language ..

I find that browns tend to be the easiest transition from membranes

Browns have the tactileness of a blue and the force needed and sound of a red so that gets my vote. I persoanlly do not like reds for the mushy feel to them but that might just be me.

I agree with @WoodenMarker on this.  I have a Corsair K70 with Browns and it's great.

I used a membrane keyboard for ten years before I bought my K70.

Yo, all can be answered with the link in my signature :)

Reds are light, linear and quiet. Browns are light, tactile, quiet and marginally heavier than reds.

thank you but i forgot to mention i did tons of research and I do know all the technical specifications and the force needed to actuate and tagtile and linear keys and so on

My problem is I'm not sure about which would be more comfortable for me in real life other than specs and theries :( i can't get the experience myself for the previously stated reasons

And thanks for all the guys who said brown ;) you're helping me with my decision :)

I'm still unsure though.. some say reds are awesome and browns are like dirty reds

others say reds are mushy and feel uncomfortable while typing

Reds feel insanely light to myself. I prefer reds as I love gaming on them and browns are actually my least favorite switch but that's just me. If you like the membrane feel then browns are more your type. If you like the tactile bump, then browns are more your type. If you were to game 100% of the time you used your PC, you should go for reds.

And for gaming most of the time a lot of people do like the reds, but most people I know for gaming have browns so it can go either way. Browns are better for typing imo because you know when the key has been pushed down enough and for me it is great for gaming so I hope you grab the switch perfect for you.
