Welcome to the Forum.

You'd almost certainly be bottlenecked. It depends on the game, but if you were playing something CPU-intensive then I'd expect less than 50% overall GPU usage.

Sig under construction.

yes that would bottleneck.  Look into something like an i5 for such a system

you'll be nottlenecked. i suggest getting an i5 to avoid any bottlenecks.

As "recent" discoveries show, it won't bottleneck in Tomb Reider, however in other AAA titles such as GTA V and pretty much anything else it will. Get an i5, or in the worst case an i3 and be happy with it :)

how big of a bottleneck, you'd be lucky to get 50% usage of your gpu in most games.

I had an 8120 at 3.9 GHz until Friday night and even with mantle my GPU usage never got over 75% in BF4 and it was constantly dropping a lot further than that.

The bottleneck will be significant.

Watch this.

The 750K he used is pretty much the same as your 5800k, except for integrated graphics. Your R9 290 is similar to the gtx780 that he uses, so you can expect the same results he gets.

Ehh... Why go with something that old like the A10-5800K?

My personal recommendation would be something like an Athlon X4 860K or an i3-4150...

kompooterz.

Not an 860K, that's almost the same as what he has now.

Yes, but you won't be getting all of the performance out of it.

yes it will be a big jump, but if you went with an r9 270 or r9 280 you'd probably see the same performance as the r9 290 in most games

Then go with 290 now, youll still be able to play at decent fps till you get better CPU.

amd has nothing on fm2 or fm2+ that will fully use a 290 reliably. so if you're going with intel when you upgrade then definitely spring for a 290 if you're sticking with amd's fm platform then i'd recommend going for a 280.
