I am looking at CPUs right now, and I'm not sure if I want and i3 4150 or an i5 4440. I know the i5 would be better in almost all cases, but I'm not sure if it would be worth an extra $80. I plan to mostly just do things like using chrome and streaming high quality (1440p when possible) video. I won't be doing much gaming besides really simple games like minecraft. I think the i5 would probably last a bit longer, but having it in the build makes it a bit pricey for me. So my main question is will the i5 seriously outclass the i3, or will they be pretty close in performance?

Minecraft is CPU intensive. 1440p can be taxing to decode. Yes, the i5 will outclass it by far.

Wait a week, have an extra $80, buy it.

Not everyone has a job. $80 / week is a lot for half or more of the people on the forums, since most of us are around 17.

They'll be pretty close, but the i5 is a bit better.

What does the rest of the build look like?

Its with a gtx 660 (for at least another year or two), 8gb ram

The chip will last as long as you don't need more performance than it can offer.

In your case, an i3 is fine. Get it.

Wait a week, have an extra $80, buy it.

During the summer I will get an average of $20 or so per week, so it would be a month.

An i3 will give you more than enough performance for what you named.

They'll be pretty close, but the i5 is a bit better.

Based on these, I will plan on getting the i3, thanks for the help.

If you are one a tight budget, get the i3. However I would save up that bit of extra mony and get the i5 as it out performs the i3 by quite a bit.

Extra power doesn't mean much and meets a wall of diminishing returns when the cpu is already enough.

If your doing streaming i5 is the way to go, but id strongly suggest an i7 for that or AMD 8 core if youre on strict budget.

Thats not what I meant, I meant streaming from a website, not live uploading.

You might want to call that 'watching videos' instead of 'streaming' to avoid confusion in the future.

I said streaming because in my experience, streaming it from a website takes much more CPU power to run that just playing videos I've already downloaded. It also doesn't help that I stream from one of the least power efficient websites I've seen (kissanime). Next time I'll have (downloading) after if I talk about that type of streaming though.

yes, and for that reason it's well worth the extra $...a strong quad core is what you need.

But will it really matter for what I'll use it for? It doesn't seem like it should require an especially powerful CPU for my uses.

It depends. In your case you don't REALLY need an in i5. But its alot better....

It probably wouldn't matter.

The OP isn't running Passmark all day but instead playing some games and browsing the web.

The i5 is better but inappropriate like a Formula One is for someone who won't ever drive faster than 60mph.

I meant if he WERE to play something. I mean he would have 2/3 more performance. That is why I said IT DEPENDS. If this guy thinks he is going to stick to streaming, he should get the i3, but if he decides he might try to load CS:GO, he will have far greater performance..

described use scenario sounds like an i3 would indeed be appropriate for a while..if youre sure not to dive into AAA gaming down the road its fine.

The 4150 would be fine for that as CSGO is much more reliant on fast single cores than sheer quantity.

I would recommend an i3 for you....

However waiting for a great deal on an intel i3 or i5, might just be the right thing for you, unless you are in a hurry.

in which case i would get the i3

However if you are into overclocking (or just a cheaper cpu) i highly recommend you buy the Intel Pentium G3258 Anniversary edition:

I don't need to go below the i3 in price, I am fine with the price the i3 entailes. It is also a bit better than the g3258, becuase of the hyperthreading.
