Stop comparing an old GPU with a brand new one. The GTX 980 launched earlier this year, and the 290X is (i believe) nearly 2 years old...I hate seeing people comparing them, it's pretty obvious that cutting-edge technology is going to beat out old technology. Just because the 290X has more memory is a stupid reason to hold them as equivalents. When the 300 series releases (if it ever does) THEN it will be a fair comparison. But please stop trying to compare these two cards.

Why? The 290X is still a strong performer, and compared to the 980 its quite a bit better price for slightly lower performance.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's a load of shit.

Though personally I'd go for the 980 over a 290x as I prefer it when my components don't produce shitloads of heat or eat through my power bills.

the only reason people compare them is because the 290x is the best GPU that AMD makes, and obviously it performs worse

but it is way cheaper than a 980, so its price performance ratio is better

doesnt mean they cant be compared

i can compare a 8800gt to a 290 if I feel like it, nobody says you cant

290x has more memory?

Is this supposed to be a

970 vs 290x?

yeah the 980 and 290x both have 4GB... unless OP is talking about 8GB 290xs

Because he (wrongly) referred to the vram gate here

"Just because the 290X has more memory"

in that case

290x: $280 - same FPS - 4GB vram - High power consumption - tends ot be louder but not always

970: $310 -same fps- 3.5gb vram -low power consumption - tends to be quieter but not always

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

you can add a 780/780Ti that that list. the full size Kepler chips produce about the same heat as 290/290x (heat output, not core temperatures), because they are from the same time period. I know, big surprise.

Sorry dude, but the 290x is still loaded with more horsepower than a 970 and the 290x can be had for around $280. My $369 290x gets 5fps less than a $550 980, sometimes even less. What's newer is NOT always better. What a silly way of thinking.

and 290/290X CF is the most affordable way to power 4K  ;)

Sorry, but can we stop that joke?

You dont need more than a 650 Watt psu for 290x + 4690k...

yes please, a heavily overclocked 780 TI can suck up a LOT of power but nooo people only care about high power consumption if it's AMD

My 290x has not raised my electric bill, not even by a penny, when compared to my(Former) G1-970.

These heat rumors, the power consumption arguments, all the "cons" for a 290x are really false. My 290x may be the Lightning version, but still averages 4c less than my g1-970 did. And uses about the wattage of 3 case fans more power. Which in a year, may equate to $5.... still cost you a shit-ton less to own a 290x over a 970 AND you get a stronger card!

As a Former Nvidia Fan Boy, it still amazes me to see just how much they have brainwashed all of you.

And yes, I bought the G1-970... found out about the VRAM... and jumped ship. Glad I did. My Valley, Heaven, and Fire Strike scores are all happy too.

And that's being on the incredibly safe side. I can get away with a 650W easily with 290 crossfire (if my watt meter is accurate).

I use an 850W PSU to be safe, but its overkill.

Mate, I'm not brainwashed at all. My comment was purely a joke, obviously it was not taken that way by a few stuck-up members of the community. I don't mind what card you buy, just that I'm loving my GTX980. If I had bought a 970 and been pissed by the ram, I probably also would've jumped to AMD.

Please dont just blindly assume I'm brainwashed.

You can compare them, just like I can compare my i5-2500K to my Phenom II X4 965.  You just shouldn't compare them as if they're supposed to compete directly. You have to compare what's available, so it doesn't bother me if people compare the two but as far as AMD vs. NVIDIA arguments go, "look how much better the 980 is than the 290X" is a pretty silly thing to say. Frankly it is not impressive to me if the 980 beats the 290X, considering the 290X is a year older. It's kind of expected. In fact it'd be pretty damn embarrassing if the 980 DIDN'T beat the 290X.

As far as comparing for shopping purposes, again you have to compare what's available. But since they're not in the same price bracket anymore they shouldn't be compared like competitors. The 980 costs like twice as much as a 290X in the US. If you're going to point out that the 980 beats the 290X, you might as well also point out that the 290X beats the 750 Ti. Should we care? No, not really. The 970 vs 290X is a more interesting argument there.

And finally as for the heater jokes, I have a 780 Ti and it puts out just as much heat as a 290/290X. I don't see you making any jokes about Kepler. Everyone seems to think those were just fine in the power and heat department and the 290/290X are just as good.

When you want to buy a high-end graphics card, it makes sense to take a look at the best cards each brand has to offer and compare them. It's not our fault for comparing an old GPU such as the 290X with the newer GTX 980, it's AMD's fault for still not having an answer to Maxwell.
