Should I upgrade from a GTX 660 2GB to a GTX 960 4GB?

kdsjr123

Should I upgrade from a GTX 660 2GB to a GTX 960 4GB? I have been wanting to upgrade from a 2GB card to something bigger. I don't want to get a 970 because it will bottleneck my FX-6300 (I should be upgrading that in about half a year to a 4690k). Should I sell my GTX 660 and get the 960 4GB?

Thanks,

Nto a bad idea, but your CPU will might hold you back a bit until you upgrade

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

(I should be upgrading that in about half a year to a 4690k).

I'd wait till then, that seems like the best option... Let's see what other people think.

I don't think you quite understand what the term bottleneck means, a CPU will only bottleneck a GPU when you're playing a CPU intensive game. Otherwise the 970 will always work at it's fulliest.

i'd go for the 970 since it's good value. You'll be fine with that

So whenever I play a CPU intensive game the GPU will slow down to match the CPU? So the CPU is limiting me?

Get the 970... It will still work great, a small bottleneck just means you'll sometimes have lower framerates than you would with an i5 but it's still better performance than with a 960. Also, if you're upgrading to the 4690 later on then go all out and get the most powerful GPU you can get.

Yes, if you upgrade any bottle neck will more often then not come from your cpu

Definitely. The 960 would provide a considerable upgrade, but if you can, get the 970.

If you live in the U.S. an R9 280X for $190 is a much better card, and deal.

If you're going the 970 route, a R9 290 or R9 290X should be in the same price bracket and the 290X should be a bit stronger.

Feel free to upgrade GPU properly now and get a better CPU later.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
