So the story goes like this. We have our Niece/Nephew over this weekend. And don't you think the Niece decided that it was a great idea to use the microwave as a stepping stone to get up to higher shelves. And before you knew it, there was a loud bang; The microwave had fallen down, hinge broken and everything.

With the story out of the way. We need a new one. And I don't really have too much experience with them myself. So I came here, think that you guys could lend me a hand in finding one for me?

Budget: $150 or so.

Wanted Features: Would be real nice if it had a timer function. Those are great to have when you're baking/cooking. Can't really think of any more than that. So go wild?

Damn, that sucks.

I can't suggest anything, but what wattage are you after?

Nothing in particular. As long as it heats stuff in a reasonable amount of time (I usually dial back the power normally, anyways).

best bet would be to just go into a store and buy one. with microwaves its more aesthetics and ease of use then anything.

Yeah, we're about to head out to a store to check what's out there. Could probably give you guys an update what we ended up getting :D

my suggestion is to go to your nearest store that sells kitchen equipment and ask the guy working there on your own. most times they are trained to give you what you need.

Measure the one you have if it fits in a cubby. Head down to your big box store and pick one you like. I just use the default feature and non of those fancy stuff.

just remember theres a diffrence between overhead and normal microwaves.

some have vents built into them if they go over a stove/range. others are made to just set on a countertop, so they dont have that vent. From your story it sounds like it was above your stove, so in that case you will need one with vents. besides that, just pick the nicest looking one with the features you want lol

The one we had was one on a counter top.

And I'll be heading out now to look for a new one now. Update will be had in an hour or so.

Yeah, MOST of the time

Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

I haven't had a bad experience with any microwaves as of yet myself, so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in brands.  Try to get a larger one if you've any concern that a smaller size might not be able to fit the odd big thing that gets nuked.  Convection is probably off the list due to budget, unless it is second hand, but dang to they seem handy.

As a college student, I have a microwave in my dorm room. I had this one, but the magnatron gave out in less than two months. Reviews seem pretty consistent with that.

I replaced it with this one, and it works great. It is way quieter as well.

At home our Bosch microwave ($450) just went out and I didn't have enough time while home to fix it before I went back to school and any local repair places would charge more than the cost of the microwave. So my mom replaced it with an LG unit. Unfortunately it arrived broken and the replacement for that one started making very loud noises.

What i'm getting at here is microwaves are kind of a hit or miss, and spending a ton of money on them isn't really worth it. But your budget kind of reflects that idea anyway. Your best bet is to find out what stores around you have, and read reviews online. Many of them will be easily eliminated based on poor reviews.
