I've finally gotten rid of my old Dell Optiplex 760 that I was using for as a PC to configure my Cisco routers, switches etc. Now obviously I've got no serial port on my motherboard.

So I found a Serial to USB adapter, tried it, it didn't work. Now, where can I find any cheap ones? or shall I get a Serial PCI card?

you may have one, but only a header. You only need an adapter cable...

The onboard one will work fine, because you don't need special drivers to emulate a serial port.

All the PCI cards are damn expensive. £35

This adapter doesn't need a PCI slot of you MoBo. You should fine it for 5-10 $.
