Right.

I have been trying to Overclock my 8320 but my Vet's aren't having none of it. So I knew I needed to upgrade my motherboard.

Then I was recommended to switch to Intel (which I was eventually planning on doing anyway). So I was thinking i5 4690k and an Asus Z97-A.

But I've just seen that the Sabertooth 990fx is on Amazon for £130 and moving to Intel would cost me about £290.

I would like to hear people's opinions on this, do I ditch the 8320 (well use it as a second pc which I want to build) or just grab the sabertooth. I'm not a 'fanboy' of either, I'd like maximum performance for as little as possible. Also are there any other cheaper Z97 motherboards that would handle a decent Overclock and has decent crossfire support?

I would go with the i5-4690K and an Asus Z97-A any day of the week.

Intel Core i7-5820K (4.4 GHz) | Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB  | 2x 360mm Custom Loop (Noctua iPPC) | ASRock X99 Extreme6 | Samsung 840 EVO 250GB | Fractal Design Define S | Corsair HX750 | Windows 10 | Corsair M65 RGB PRO | Corsair K70 RGB LUX (CherryMX Brown) | Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro & Creative Sound Blaster Z | Nexus 6P (32GB Aluminium) | Check out my setup: Project Kalte Here!

It depends on the games you play again...

In some rare cases even an i3 beats out the 8320.

But at the moment I would heavily recommend Intel any day for better performance, AMD just doesn't pull ahead anymore, sad times...

CPU: i7-4770k (LM modded) - MB: GA-Z87X-UD3H - RAM: HyperX, 16GB 1866MHz - GPU: Palit GTX 980Ti Super - Storage: 1TB HDD + 500GB/120GB SSD (850 Evo/840) - Monitor: Predator XB271HU - PSU: 700W BeQuiet 80+ Gold

BF4 mainly. But I play a bit of dying light, skyrim (few mods), BF3, Trine 2 and a couple of others. My graphics card is a Gigabyte r9 280x

What would be your budget?

It's not really set in stone. At the moment I can go and buy the sabertooth right now but if it's seriously worth going Intel I have no problem waiting until I can spend ~£300

I'd say go Intel. For that you could go for the I7 4790k and Z97 motherboard. What cooler do you currently have?

Ah, the old "don't comment on it if you have not tested it yourself" comment.

At the moment 4 cores is just plenty in most games and you are better off with 4 strong cores rather than 8 weaker ones.

Many games just don't utilise the 4 other cores of the chip.

-snip-

For gaming?

The i5 would probably be the best decision.

Not sure about cheap Z97 SLI board, but I know MSI, Asus and Gigabyte make good boards.

Where from? I don't have a use for a i7 so I'd rather save the money (and spend it on a cooler) but on Amazon the 4790k is listed as £270 and I doubt I could find a decent £30 motherboard. It's an Akasa thing I got for free. No Intel mount. My idea was if I went Intel, buzz about at stock until I got a decent cooler

I'd need an ATX motherboard. Got a few cards that need a home. (Thats why i was looking at the Z97-A)

So now my main problem. Is it worth it to dump AMD for my main rig and spend £300 on Intel or would £130 be better spent on just a new motherboard. I would like to go intel for my next move but am wondering if I should do it right now. Is this a good time to move? (I'd certainly love to... but money money money :D )

BTW I did enjoy your sig xD

Thank you, also Intel will be better in most games because of AMDs poor IPC (Instructions Per Clock)

according to him he already has the amd processor so i dont see the point of buying intel i5

The core i5-4690K CPU is completely a worthy upgrade to even the FX-9590 when it comes to gaming, that's all there is to say about it!

Your vet?

Anyway it depends on the game you play, if they require stronk single threads go intel, if you want to save up try the i5 4460 it isn't bad trust me.

I think he means VRMs on his current mobo can't handle an OC.

@Samwell How badly do you need a 2nd PC? Is it a necessity, or just something you want to do? If it isn't a necessity, consider selling your CPU and mobo, and moving over to Intel. This way you get the performance you want without taking as much of a hit. Either way, a switch to Intel is going to get you the performance you are looking for.

stick with amd fx8320

because games are taking use of 8 cores soon so it will be better than i5 if all cores are used

They're not taking advantage of them any time soon but whatever.

I'd like a portable box I can take where I need. But I think I've decided to just go Intel. Thanks the the input and help everyone :)
