4790k vs 5820k

Go to solution Solved by C3DMaX,

thanks everyone, i guess this topic can be marked as solved or whatever :D

i'll go x99

Hey guys,

I'm on the verge of upgrading.

I'll be going from an fx8320 to either an i74790k or 5820k

as I'm also rendering videos on a regular basis im interested in the 5820k,

while having to buy new ram is a negative point, especially with ddr4 pricing.

what i would like to know is by how much the rendering performance will differ between the two

and also how gaming performance will differ on cpu bound games like skyrim, as I'm having abysmal performance in (heavily) modded skyrim on the AMD right now.

thanks in advance,

Xeon E3-1231-v3 // 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro // Asus Z97AR // XFX RX 480 GTR

For nearly every game out there 4790k and 5820k are going to be equal at the same clocks.

when you say at the same clocks you mean. if the 5820 is oc'ed to ~4GHz?

if yes, how bad can one lose the silicon lottery with those cpus?

4790k turbo frequency is 4.4, but yes, with the 5820k equaling the clock of the 4790k. Most 5820k's can hit at least 4GHz, although I'm sure there are some samples out there below 4.0.

Regardless, the biggest improvement you're going to be experiencing is moving to a platform with much greater IPC, and either choice should make your modded Skyrim run like butter.

You're splitting hairs on the clock and gaining 2 extra cores and 4 threads with the 5820k, big deal for rendering, not so much for games ATM. DX12 may change that, but I wouldn't bet on it being a monumental difference between the 4790k and 5820k.

thanks, i think I'll go with the 5820k , what made me worrie was, some benchmarks and comparison pages showing the 5820k having less single core performance

Even if it does, it will be very slight and you won't notice it. Just buy it if you can afford it and don't worry about gaming performance, because it will be nearly the same as a 4790K
