Laptop screen brightness cannot be changed sometimes

This problem has persisted for a while. Sometimes, after opening a fullscreen application (a game) and alt-tabbing out, I am completely unable to adjust the brightness of my screen until I restart my PC. The strange part is that the animation that plays when changing the brightness still plays normally, but the brightness doesn't actually change. The weird part is the "sometimes". Sometimes this locks me out of changing the brightness right away, sometimes it doesn't and I can alt-tab all day with no problem.

 

On an Asus ROG G750. Any ideas how to fix it when it happens or prevent it from happening entirely?

have you checked the power options in the nVidia control panel and in  the Control panel?

 

make sure both are set to high performance

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.
