I have been finding that my desktop icons seem to move them selves around every now and then, does anyone know what is causing this? I am usually really cautious with my downloads, so I don't believe it is a virus, but then again it might be. If you have an answer also give me a way to troubleshoot please, thank you.

you might have just chose an option in the Sort By when you right click on the desktop. Like maybe Sort By>Name.

So any new app/folder/shortcut might change your desktop's arrangement of icons. The desktop doesn't sort immediately you'd need to refresh the desktop first.

Do you use any programs that change screen resolution? In some cases icons don't go back to where they should be when changing back to native resolution. Also windows 8's desktop split feature messes up my icons sometimes as well.

Are you playing for example old games with a low resolution?

That sometimes changes the position of icons.

I just sorted by name, I'll see if it stays that way.

I don't ever touch my screen res. The only thing I did prior to this happening was I had 3 windows open as I was programming, so I split them up and had them all covering the screen, when I deleted my windows that I was using I found some icons had moved around

Nope, I was doing some coding, looked at the desktop, and noticed a few blank spaces where my icons moved from

Maybe you pressed Ctrl + mousewheel scolling ?
