No one has an 8k monitor

4k is rare enough

Film resolution is ~8K, so this sensor can effectively replace traditional film cameras and directors don't need to worry about loss of detail.

IMAX is 16K, so another doubling is needed before they can think of retiring those. But IMAX has a 70mm to work with, that matters just as much as the 16K resolution.

Theatres are largely at 4K now. IMAXs new laser projectors can scale up to whatever they need. This is where a camera like this comes into play.

There's a photo/video section for a reason :P

I know, figured this might be relivent to more people than just those interested in video because of IMAX and that as 8k is now the new best, 4k will come down in price on the camera side. Many TV shows are shot in 1080p because the style of camera they use often only supports that and because the render in that.

But if you wish to produce 4k video and need to crop a shot you need more than 4k resolution. So you just use 8k. Works way better. Gives the editor a lot more freedom of pixels to work with ( assuming he has the multiple Quadro's to be able to work with this)

Actually while that is nice the head editor for Gone Girl has said 5k is enough for them but it is for the VFX that 6k was useful, so I think 5k will still be the standard for editing and 8k will now be for VFX because more pixels you have the better quality and accuracy you can produce.

Most TV is shot on the Alexa in 2K (1080p is 1.9K) :D

Oh for some shows yes but I was thinking of the newer shows that need to be 'real life' ones, those they use high end camcorders and most of them shoot in 1080p but yes for ones where there is a lot of actors and such then the Alexa is the main one used. Should have clarified before.

Yeah once my friend heard that he now rents a 4k camera for certain shots when he makes his short films (going to school for it) but exports in 1080p. He says the 4k is great to work with, so the principle would be the same for 4k and 8k.

I have done some vfx for him since he started renting and I must say so much easier than before.

Really though, this camera is going to be $25k or up, mark my words

Read the article, 50 or 54k So 25 is very low guess of yours, remember who is making it. They charge like crazy.

Very interesting, I had no idea about this.

Oh my body is as ready as it gets (would be a bit of a shame considering my 4k monitor is barely 6 months old though ^^)
